When I was a child my grandfather came to visit my family for the first time. He brought his girlfriend to introduce us to her. My mother was very nervous and decided to go all out on dessert and make two pies. One was cherry and the other was apple. While cherry pie was my childhood favorite, the apple pie was beautiful and looked like something from a magazine. After dinner when we were given our choice of pies, everyone except my younger brother wanted a piece of apple pie.

With pride my mother cut the pie and served it. My grandfather took the first bite of the beautiful pie and spit it our (almost across the table).

It turned out that my mother had added over a cup of salt and a tsp. of sugar - mixing up the two ingredients.

So if you ever want to make a beautiful pie that no one will each, add more salt.

To this day the family jokes about the great impression my mother made on my grandfather with her baking (he never visited us again.)

I have done that mixing up salt and sugar. It is easy to do. Sorry that your grandpa never visited again-- hope it wasn't because of the pie -- if so, maybe I will try that on a few relatives that constantly show up at our place unannounced and wear out their welcome lol

I think I should try that on a couple of people that I don't like in my husbands family when they come over.

I REALLY have to remeber to 'accidently' mix up ingredients for those unwanted guests!

I mixed up Sugar & Salt one time. We were doing a dinner for about 100 people. I was suppose to be mixing up the sauce for Broccolli salad. Thought I had grabbed the sugar. Guess what? I didn't. Luckily someone tasted it before we served it so we didn't have everyone spitting the Broccolli salad around the room.

I'll knock on wood that I've never done this mix up. I have forgot to put the sugar in my rhubarb pie once and that was yuk but this reminds me of the time when we were little and my cousin put salt in my parents sugar bowl so when they had coffee the next morning - they were in for a surprise.

That is my nightmare! I always worry about taking food to someone and having it be horrible.

My mom did the "same" with doughnuts once, she bought everything in bulk and stored salt and sugar in recycled coffee cans - They looked alike.

That is funny. My sisters did the same thing when they were 11. They made peanut butter cookies and they were salty. We still joke and laugh about it quite often.

Talk about embarassment. Maybe Grandpa should have given her another chance. He will never know what he missed.
