Vertie is one of our grandchildren that we raised straight from the hospital. She is grown and has moved out now but she comes to visit us often. She came in today and had a set of new knives for me. I am always fussing about not being able to find a sharp knife to cut up potatoes with. I have always loved potatoes. I even peel them and eat them raw like some folks eat an apple. I reall like a dish we call "tater chips". When Vertie came in with the knives she said gram I am going to make you some "tater chips" which I do not get very often any more because they are fried in grease and I do not eat fried foods much anymore due to health problems. Anyway the kids will let me have theses "tater chips" maybe once a month or every 6 weeks and just a small portion when they do make them. I am glad I like potatoes all different ways but like I said I really like these. I went into the kitchen with Vertie to talk with her and to help her peel the potatoes. She said here try one of the new knives, they are really sharp so be careful. I picked the little paring knife up and tried to cut the potatoe skin off. I don't know what you gave for these knives but whatever it was, I think it was too much. This knife does not work. Vertie looked at me and she started laughing. I did not think it was funny, spending money and the knife did not even peel a potatoe. Gram she said as they were all laughing, if you turn the knife blade around the other way it will work right. I had the sharp part turned toward my hand and the dull side trying to peel the potatoe. Sure enough when I turned that knife around it worked just fine. We got the potatoes peeled and then we used the grater to slice them nice and thin. Then carefully put them into the hot grease and let them get brown. They cook quickly and then take them out and drain on a paper towel to eliminate some of the grease, add garlic powder and black pepper and you are ready to enjoy "tater chips" that are fresh and crispy and habit forming so be careful...Vertie stayed for a little while and then had to leave. I sure miss her every time she comes and goes but I guess that is what we are suppose to do. Raise them up to be independent and let them go out on their own. I remember at 18 I sure thought I was grown...I look back now and realize just how much I still had to learn. Of course no one could tell me at the time that I was not grown either. We live and we learn by living our lives daily and hopefully we become even better as we age in maturity and wisdom by the grace of God. Thanks for reading and have a good day, Donna G.

That one really hit the spot! I love cooking with my grandchildren and having them do most of the prep work and letting me enjoy their work is special.

Have you written a book? It seems like you have so many stories to share along with photos and they seem so adventurous

I am in the process of writing a book containing family memories. We use to ask our dad what ethnic group we come from and he would say we were a Hei*z 57 and we wondered what that ment. I have always been the one to collect pictures and stories and found what dad ment. On his side we have a great grandmother who was full blooded Commance and great grandpaw was irish and Scottish, and another grandmother was hispanic and on the other side we have German, irish, french and great grandmaw Stewart dad was part Apache. I had pictures of thr great grandmother when she turned 100 and they took her picture. She looked so scared and I ask my uncle and dad why and they said because she was afraid it would take her soul away. Thar was the only picture that was ever taken of her, it was on one of those metal plates that you see from the old western movie cameras. Also my granny Lockharts dad was a buffalo hunter and we had pictures of them on an old wagon with the hides on it, so you can see why dad said we were He*nx 57 when we ask what we were. I guess I did get some of the Irish heritage because I do like to talk and tell of stories and also traveling to different places in the ministry too meeting all the many different people. I have been truly blessed and I am thankful to Jesus for all He has blessed me with. Thanks for reading and have a good day, Donna
