I decided to prepare a Thanksgiving meal for my husbands family we had been married for 11 months and I thought it would be fun to cook for them! I grew up in a large family and love to cook so for me this wasn't supposed to be a big chore. Well I decided to make an Angel Food Cake from scratch since I had received a new pan as a wedding gift! Big mistake and unfortunatley I thought I knew everything there was to know about baking. Well I sent my husband to his Grandmas to borrow a sifter so my cake would be light and airy! When he got back I was already working hard to make the cake. Well with the small hand mixer it took what seemed like days to beat the egg whites to the proper stiffness well then I discovered I didn't have Cream of Tartar or Cake flour well I didn't have long so I wasn't sure what roll the Cream of Tartar played in the process and flour is flour so I just left out the Tartar and used all purpose flour! Well anyone can guess what happen it didn't look to bad going into the oven but as it came out even the garbage can didn't know what hit it. Well father in law trying to make me feel good tried to eat a piece without success! We all laughed about it and from that day forth i will always use a boxed mix!!

How funny. Your memory brought forth forgotten (hidden) baking blunders of my own. As a young child helping in the kitchen, my father proudly took many of my baking attempts to work with him. I believe people also ate them to make me feel better. My own family knew better!

I also didn't know what cream of tartar's important use in baking was. After a few blunders cream of tartar is always in my pantry. Great story...brings back my own baking flops.

How cute. I tried celery seed in dressing for the celery and that didn't work out. Some times there are no substitutes. Funny story

I remember my first attempt at blueberry pie. My partner and I ( in home ec.) used canned filling. She said we needed 2 cups of sugar. It was like a brick. No one could even eat it. It was too hard.
