I was a very young girl when I learned the joy of baking/cooking from my mother. I remember thinking that once you learn a few steps this should be the easiest thing ever. We were living in Washington state at the time and lived on a lake.I wanted to make a cake for my mother's birthday. Mom was a big cake lover (chocoalte was her favorite). I got everything together to make my moms cake the eggs, flour, shorting, baking powder (so I thought) sugar you know all the stuff needed to make a cake. I get everything mixed in the bowl, then place into two pans to bake, thinking the whole time that mom was going to love this suprise. Into the 350 dregee oven for 25 mins. like you should. I pull out the cakes thinking to myself "These should be taller I think." but not being a developed baker I cooled the cakes, iced them, and served the Birthday cake to my mom after dinner. As I brought the cake out with candles blazing singing "Happy Birthday to you....." as loud as I could and thinking about not dropping the cake I get it to the table and sit it down for mom to blow out the candles while I finish the Birthday song. I get done singing and notice that my mom is all but rolling on the floor laughing, I know that my sining is not up to "American Idol" stanards but I thought does she have to laugh so hard. When my mom did stop laughing I asked her "What are you laughing at mom?" She pointed to my cake and said "I think that you might have forgotten to add something to your cake batter" I asked "What? How do you know just by looking at it???" My mom smiled and said "Sister, when you make a cake it should be light, fluffy, moist and should be taller than two inches per layer." Being the mom she still tryed to eat a piece of her Birthdaycake but I didn't try to bake from scratch for a really long time after that and when I did I made sure to messaure out all nedded ingredients first so I don't forget something. I have tought my daughters the same trick.Writing this story makes me both happy and sad because my mom is no longer with us to be able to have those kind of times with her granddaughters but I try to as much as I can.

we all make mistakes on our first try. Thankfully you had a wonderful mother who could laugh and help you along the way.

We all mess things up sometime but my sister baked her first cake and it was wonderful but something was wrong she make it with selfrising flour and then she added baking powder and sofa along with salt and if you had heart burn or and upset stomach it was cured, not only that she put the frosting on the cake when it was warm and it run off the cake on the plate to the table and on the floor. That was my sisterfirst cake

Well blesss your heart and hoefully you are better for your mistake and the memory you have of your mom laughing. In times as these when they are departed, it's all we have left.
