I have always loved to bake, and began baking at about age 10. When I was in my twenties, I was ready to move along to more difficult areas such making banana bread. My mom had passed away when I was 17, and I had her cookbook to look to when I was ready to tackle any type of recipe. This cookbook is a 1968 Betty Crocker hard cover. It is like a Bible to Cooking for me!
I found a recipe for homemade banana bread in the cookbook which Mom had clipped from a newspaper, and I don't know just how old it is but I believe it be pretty old. I think it may be from the 1940's.
After looking over the ingredients and directions I was sure I could make this banana bread, no problem! Little did I know...
I followed the directions exactly, but something must have been wrong because the loaf was so heavy it could have been used as a doorstop! I don't know if I accidentally added too much flour or what, it was a long time ago. But I do remember how hard it was to mix that heavy, sticky dough by hand and then how heavy each loaf was when they came out of the oven!
I put the recipe away, embarassed by my "brick banana bread" and did not attempt to make banana bread again for a couple of years.
When I did try it again, the bread came out perfectly and it is now on my "most requested" list from friends and family!
Whatever happened I couldn't say. But I am truly honored I can re-create my Mom's save recipe so well that it is a favorite for everyone!

Too bad you couldn't figure out what went wrong with the first batch.  But I am glad you were brave enough to try it again.  Your Mom is smiling down on you every day.

I've had similar first time baking disasters too.  I was about 12 at the time and thought I could make a cake without any assistance from mom.   So when she wasn't in the house I made one.   My first cake was made from a box mix .  When it was done, it hadn't risen and had holes throughout it like swiss cheese and was very rubbery.  My brother, Mike, was the only one to eat it.  Yes, Mikey will eat anything as the old commercial used to say.

Thanks for your kind words...it's funny, but now the banana bread is my most requested baked good from family and friends!  I have mastered it and every time I make it, I know my mom is proud of my accomplishment!  I also add Nestle mini tollhouse chocolate chips to the loaves and omit the nuts and my daughter and the grandkids love it!  There is so much you can do with banana bread!

What is your favorite recipe?  I have to say, I lean toward baking cookies, cakes, and loaf breads but would like to take on more dinner type dishes.  I'm going to check out the recipes on the site.  It is just my husband and me now, so we don't need the huge amount of food we did when the kids were home.

Thank you!  What is your favorite baking food?  I am partial to baking breads, cookies, and cakes but would like to make more meal dishes.  It is just my husband and me now, so we don't need the large portions we did when the kids were all home.  I don't think Tollhouse Morsels will ever go out of style, at least not in my house, lol!

GRANA here;
My first solo baking effort was a pineapple upside down cake when I was 8 years old...My  Mom had planned to bake it but was  sick in bed   I hoped to make her "all  better"w/ my yummy cake. It was yummy& she did feel betterInnocent  .. I used a box mix since that is how my Mom always baked .  These days I bake brownies & other bar type cookies 9from scratch) to control the ingredients ! ...they don't make him feel better but they encourage him to walk 5 miles  daily  in order to be  able to eat & enjoy  the goodies w/o outgrowing his wardrobe.

Thanks for a memory that made me smile.  We all have made something that just did not turn out the way it should.
