The first time I was invited to help my mom bake I was so excited. We were baking a carrot cake from scratch. Wanting to do everything just right and be a big help to my mom, I didn't ask for clarification when my mom asked for a 'cup' to measure the flower. I left my mom working on the recipe and turned to the cupboard which housed the 'cups' and glasses. I opened the cupboard and peered in at the variety of cups and glasses I had to choose from. A cup. Hmmm... What kind of cup? A tall or short cup? A pretty glass that I can see through or a plastic 'cup' that I drink from? What about the coffee mugs? The more I thought about it, the more confused I got. There must be one right cup? How could there be such a difference in the amount each cup holds? If everyone used their favorite cup, everyone would be using different amounts. Wouldn't the recipe require a specific amount? Of course it would, but just specifying '1 cup' wasn't enough of a description for me to pick the best 'cup' from the cupboard. Finally, my mom came to me looking for the measuring cup and saw the distressed look on my face. Now since this was the first time I was allowed to help, I wanted to do everything just right, but I needed help. With a defeated feeling, I explained my quandary to my mom. She couldn't help but smile and tried to hold back a laugh as she explained that the recipe was asking for a 'measuring cup' and pulled them out of the drawer. Of Course! I had seen my mom using those before and should have known! How Funny! What a relief! I will always remember that, and once in a while, when I reach for the measuring cup, give a little smile... :o)

I'm Happy that you have that memory of your Mom! I have seen adults on television, that use the wrong "cup".

This makes me think of so many stories saying some of the older bakers who "never measured anything" I would be willing to wager that each of them had a pet cup from the cupboard that was used to scoop the flour or sugar. By using the same old cup or sponn consistantly, they were actually measuring. They probably began their kitchen duties befor standard measuring cups spoons, etc were that readily available. Standard measures made it easier to provide instructions for others to get the results desired.

How cute and a great memory. That is so understandable about different size and shapes of cups just like life. You want to choose just the right one

Thats funny and cute. When I was a lot younger and I was cleaning kitchen my dad told me to use some elbow grease so of course I looked under the sink for some. He told me to use more pressure to clean. Thanks for sharing.

So sweet.  I remember doing similar things.  You have to learn all these things.  Later, it is second nature & you forget that not everyone knows what all these words mean.Smile
