My story involves me and my older sister Kathy. One summer day we decided to surprise my mother and make the Nestle Toll House Cookies that she was planning to bake for Vacation Bible School. Wanting to help her since she was at work, we decided to make them up and thus allow her some free time in the evening. After we had put the recipe together, we decided to let it set while we stopped for lunch preperation and enjoyment. After sitting there for a short time period, I looked over toward the cabinet and our cookie dough was starting to crawl out over the top of the mixing bowl and down the side. Of course panic set in and caused us to quickly get up and mix the dough some more, thinking we had just not managed to get everything mixed in. The mixing caused the blob to settle down some, so we settled back down and finished our lunch and cleaned up the mess from that. As we were getting ready to start baking the cookies, I looked over in the corner of the cabinet, where our bowl set and the blob had again risen over the top of the bowl and by now was running down the cabinet. At this point we grabbed a bigger bowl and put it into this bowl only to watch it rising again. Not wanting to upset our mother or to get in trouble, we quickly called our grandmother and she asked us to review the recipe with her. We read the recipe to her and she said that it shouldn't do that, so she had us go thru our ingredients and at that point my sister pulled down the container of baking powder not baking soda that she had mixed in (since she was older, she had done most of the mixing giving me jobs like sifting). My grandmother started laughing about our mistake, but still didn't think it should react that much, so she came over to our house and looked at our dough. She said it had a "yeastie" taste. My sister would never admit if she had actually added something to the recipe or not. With our grandmother's help, we quickly cleaned up our mess, having to discard our cookie dough blob into a large box to throw out, ran to the store and then mixed more dough and had them cooked before my mother was home from work. To this day, I don't know if my mother knows about our cookie dough blob. I think of this story often and the fear we had and also the hilarious laughter we had once our grandmother came and helped us figure it out.
