My brother wagered a bet of a bag of candy with me that I couldn't make chocolate chip cookies. He was 11 and I was 12. We both sold newspapers at the time, and we happened to notice a recipe in one of the papers. The bet was on.
It was Christmas time, and we were trying to help Mom make Christmas a little merrier for our younger brother and sisters.
We went to the grocery store and bought Nestle Tollhouse Chocolate Chips. We scrounged around in the kitchen for the other ingredients, butter, an egg, brown sugar, flour, baking powder, and baking soda. (I think we had to buy some chopped nuts, too if memory serves.) Alas, I was prepared and on a roll.
He started teasing me when I started the baking process, that only sissys bake anything. I told him to button his lips and proceeded to "follow the recipe". He taunted and prodded me as I carefully measured and mixed everything. I used a spoon to drop the cookies onto an ungreased sheet, and popped them into the oven. I watched the time, so that cookies wouldn't burn, and low and behold, I won the bet. My brother was surprised and a little dumbfounded.
He had to buy a bag of candy, and the whole family had a very good time sharing all the extra treats. It was a memorable Christmas. The cookies were great, and I always remember that particular Christmas whenever I eat home made Nestle Tollhouse chocolate chip cookies. They are the very best cookies in the world.
