At work the tradition on your birthday is to bring something to share with everyone, cookies, cake, or whatever is your favorite. It was my birthday that week and we were in Instructor’s Training Class learning how to make lesson plans and give presentations. It was the last day and everyone was allowed to give a demonstration or presentation on any subject. Since my birthday was the next day I decided to demonstrate how to decorate a cake. After all we were told any subject. The night before I baked 2, 8 inch round cakes, made the frosting putting some in pastry bags with the tips attached, and did some prep items for decorations including edible flowers that I had sugared. Well, everyone got such a kick out of that idea especially since the reward would be a slice of cake at the end. I gave some intro instructions and a little demonstration then asked for volunteers. I even demonstrated how to sugar the flowers. We all had a great time and some comments included a thank you for providing tips to take home to try on their own. I felt like Martha Stewart that day; it was a great experience. Well, I told my husband what I was planning to do with the cakes I was baking explaining that the fresh flowers were edible and would be part of decorating the cake. My friend and co-worker gave me some flowers for my birthday and I placed them on the table. Dinner was prepared ahead of time so there was no aroma coming from the kitchen to give a clue as to what we were having for dinner. My husband came in and looked at the flowers then asked quizzically and very puzzled if that bouquet was for dinner. After all, I do put flower peddles in the salad and flowers in other dishes as well. I even stuff zucchini blossoms for a nice lite summer lunch. My husband looked so puzzled at the bouquet that I knew he was seriously thinking that was what I was serving. Ewell Gibbins has nothing on me, you know. My husband is a meat and potatoes man and doesn’t share my particular (or should I say peculiar) taste, in dishes. I had to laugh because of the look on his face and just said, well, you never know, it just might be; then I walked away leaving him to wonder what was going on. Well, he had a meal he could enjoy and my birthday present was the look on his face when he thought I was really planning on serving the flowers for dinner.
