Big bite

In May of 1976 I was preparing a wedding shower for my best friend. The party was at my house and all day I was busy baking and cooking. We didn't have much money so I needed to make a shower cake for the party.I wanted it to be special and 2 tiers. My friend loved chocolate and I decided that since her wedding cake would be white , I would make her shower cake chocolate. My son was two at the time. All afternoon between playing and watching Sesame Street on TV he took great interest in all the goodies that I was arranging on the table. My cake turned out just perfect. I was so proud! I of course wanted to put it out on the table as soon as possible so that I could admire it and arrange all the other snacks around it. The time passed quickly and my son was really a perfect angel as I worked in the kitchen. It was about 10 minutes before the party and everything was perfect! I needed to make the punch and then I was finished. I went into the kitchen for just a few minutes leaving my son to play on the floor of the dining room which was decorated and ready for the party. I came back in with the punch bowl and set it down on the party table. As I turned to inspect everything one more time , I noticed that my son was standing very near the table where I sat the cake. The cake was at the edge of the table and was the perfect height for him to take a bite. That's exactly what happened. He walked up to the table and took an enormous bite out of the edge of the cake. He was standing looking at me with a mustache of chocolate frosting. He smiled and said "Cookie". I realized that he was mimicking Cookie Monster with my cake! I almost burst into tears but instead I burst into action and clipped two roses from the bouquet on the party table and pasted them over the hole with a little more chocolate frosting. I was able to get him and the table cleaned up before my guests arrived. Everyone remarked how beautiful the cake looked with the fresh roses on it. My son is now a handsome firefighter in Phoenix, AZ. He still likes chocolate cake. He has reformed over the years and actually cuts himself a piece of cake instead of sneaking a bite!

Too bad you didn't take a picture - but there was no time for that.  I don't know that I could have thought fast enough to put the roses on the cake.  My first thought was; turn that side to the wall.  I am glad it turned out so well.

Great story!  It seems our kids always seem to get into things at the last minute.  I'm glad it worked out for you.  I probably would have paniced and then started to cry.

I also think your guests would have totally understood if you had told them the truth. It would have given them fond memories of "that wedding shower!"Laughing

Lovely story.  Wouldn't be nice to turn back the hands of time and go back to 1976... things were so much simplier then!
