When I was a kid in Chicago my mom being the best cook in the family never cooked less than a 30 pound turkey and invited most of our relatives because they loved her cooking so much. The only thing my mother couldn't master was pie dough. She could make the dough but couldn't ever roll in out into a single piece. It always ended up in different size bits and pieces.

It was my job every year to roll out mom's pie dough the best I could and then take the pieces and try to put them all together into something that resembeled one piece. So I would slowly take each little piece and put it in the pie tin and then another piece until we at least had enough dough put together so we could add the pumpkin pie filing.

No one ever knew the difference and always raved about my mothers pies. Thank goodness when they finally came out with ready to make pie crust becaue I don't seem to have the knack of making pie crust any better than my mother did but I sure can cook.

Just thinking of my mother and me working together cooking a big dinner for my whole family always makes me feel how my mom and I worked together with loving care to prepare a dinner for our relatives and family Even today I think what a important lesson I learned about working together and how cooking and baking was my mothers way of showing her whole family how much she loved them. Cooking for 25 people takes a lot of patience, hard work and love.
