Growing up in the 50's in the town of Topeka was like a Rockwell picture. You could always find Mom in the kitchen. In our neighborhood she was known as the Baking Queen. Every kid for blocks would want to be at our house on Saturday's because that was the day Mom made her scrumptious Cream Puffs and Eclairs. But there was always something freshly baked to munch on no matter the day.
On my Mom's 29th birthday, my Dad took her out to dinner. My favorite babysitter, Barbara, thought it would be nice if we baked my Mom a birthday cake. I was only 8 1/2 years old, but already an old hand at baking...I loved to bake(and still do)! So, I got one of my Mom's recipes out of the box, and Barb and I proceeded to bake a cake. It turned out beautiful. We got it frosted, and Barb decided we should add some decoration, so my sister, Candace, got all the sprinkles out of the cabinet and set them on the counter. So we all (my sisters, Candace and Lucinda; brother Milton, neighbor Peggy, Barbara and I) proceeded to decorate with our favorite color of sprinkles. The cake was beautiful. It shined and glistened like a rainbow with the light of the candles. When Mom walked in...she was so surprised and pleased. She blew out the candles, picked up the cake, and threw it in the garbage. To our dismay, my sister had gotten into the wrong cabinet, and instead of grabbing the edible sprinkles; she had grabbed Mom's candle glass, and we had made the cake inedible. Mom helped us bake another, and this time we used the right sprinkles.
