Reading and thinking about how consumers are buying more and more store brands rather than the more expensive store brands of household items [to include food] brings to mind that I still will not substitute my Nestle Chocolate Chips for a store brand. Past experience has taught me that some things just cannot be substituted. A chocolate chip cookie is not the same without Nestle chocolate.

You are so right on that. I made the mistake of buying store brand also and it didn't melt, it was like it had wax in it. Stick to the good stuff.

I bake and cook then freeze the leftover's to have at another time.  My son has gone to a no beef or red meat meals that has made it hard for me as I was raised as a Meat and Potatoes kind of person.  But I have found that you can sub Ground turkey or chicken for all of my recipes that call for beef and it is less expensive if you use your coupons and store specials.

Although I am switching brands more and more to save money at the grocery store,  there are a few things that I will wait to be on sale.  Then I use coupons with the sale price and usually it comes out to cost the same as the lower priced product.  This is becoming harder since the expiration dates on most coupons is so short.  But it does pay to stock up when your favorites are on sale.

I trial and error most of the time  but can't afford to error much with the cost of the groceries these days.

We are buying more things at Costco in bulk even though there are just the two of us now.  My husband has devoted a shelf in the garage to store extra paper towels, napkins, even olive oil in gallon size containers.  ( I empty it into a qt bottle that is decorative and sits out)  I especially buy my Nestle's Chocolate chips in the 72 oz size at Costco.  I also buy more meat in bulk, divide it up and freeze it in smaller amounts.   We also are growing tomatoes, herbs and we have a very productive apple tree ( I make a lot of apple sauce, apple crisp, etc. and freeze that)  The tomatoes are often made into sauce and frozen.  Every bit helps!!

In the past two years I've made massive cut$ and I'm learning to live happily with so much less.
Baking cookies is not a luxury for me ...  It's something I need to do.  So I do it with the best ingredients.
I use real butter, Nestle's chips - things like that.

Store brands must be selected carefully.  Sometimes trial and error is the only way to find out if a store brand will be an adequate substitute.  For somethings there is no substitute.

Barbara B.,  It is just the two of us but we go to Costco and do the same as you do. It works really
well with the Nestles Choc Chips in the 72oz size. I now have 5 bags. I use their coupons too.

You are so true, there are some things that you just can't use no name brands. It won't taste the same.

Angela - I've wondered about that too.  I know I have to change my trips around town -- I can't just run around anymore.  It's scary

You are right, I can not believe the cost of some brand name items. we spent 180 at the store and honestly, what on earth is going on with the price of food.
