After my Mother, Daisy, would bake the Toll House chocolate chip cookies for the holidays, my sister Chris and I (Gale) would take them down to the freezer in the basement to where they would stay frozen until Christmas Eve. We didn't like that job too much because those cookies were our favorites. We didn't care if she din't bake anything else. They were yummy. We looked forward to Christmas just for those cookies. On our way down Mom would yell "and don't open those tins or you'll hear it from your Father all right". We didn't want to wait to snatch up a few just for a taste but we knew she could hear the tin open. It never failed too that one of us would drop the lid on the concrete floor and then we were in t-r-o-u-b-l-e. Pretty soon though we couldn't stand it any longer. So down we went. Chris stayed on the steps and kept watch and I went to the freezer for our goodies. Little did we know we couldn't reach inside the chest type freezer to sneak the yummy goodness for our evening plesaure. It was up on the chair to reach to the bottom. I was a pretty tall girl for my age and didn't think I would have a problem reaching. Being very quiet as not to make any noise dragging the chair on the concrete floor I was on a mission to satisfy our sweet teeth. I leaned into the freezer and picked the tin, crawled back out only to find my Mother standing next to me, hands on her hips and that look, yes that look of "busted". She took the tin and my sister and I had both hoped just one, please Mom, just one of your best. As I looked at Chris sitting on the steps, her hands over her face, waiting for the punishment to be announced, Mom opened the tin and said "I shouldn't do this and don't tell your Father". We all sat on the steps eating our cookie and telling Mom "we won't do it again, we promise". She knew well and good that that just wasn't the whole truth and nothing but the truth. My Mother Daisy and my sister Christine have both passed now but I am sure they can have the infamous Toll House cookies anytime they want now too.
