Every once in a while we try to get as many grandkids together as possible. We always have some sort of project to share with them. This peticular evening we decided to try to make popcorn balls with 6 of our 10 grandkids. The ages that were here ranged from 4 years old to 8. After popping 2 bad batches of corn we finally got down to business. To look at the faces filled with eagerness made my heart swell with pride that they were going to help make the greatest treat in the world. And then we began. After placing a small amount of butter on their tiny hands they all decided it was not enough! All of a sudden there was a flurry of hands sliding towards the butter dish leaving trails of prints all over the table. After wiping this mess up my husband and I proceeded to pour the sugar mixture over the popcorn. While he was pouring and I stirring all we could hear was LET'S START! Warning the little darlings that it was HOT!!!! was of no use. While putting a few little hands under cold water and wiping away tears, the ones left behind decided to dive in and start making the balls. After cleaning these eager beavers up we started all over with the mixing and stirring. FINALLY we were able to start forming these wonderful treats. After about 2 balls each they all decided this was boring and one by one they left to find better things to do! My poor husband looked at me in horror when he realized he was going to be the one to help me finish. After all was said and done we have decided keep our grandkids cooking projects limited to VERY simple and non-messy ones. I will always look back fondly on this moment and every day that passes it will get sweeter.

Small projects?  Great idea!   But "non-messy"?  I do not think there is any such thing with kids involved.  Laughing

Boy, this takes me back a few years! When we were growing up my older sister and I made popcorn balls nearly every Sunday in the winter time. We grew the popcorn ourselves on our farm, so it was extra-tasty. But Mom insisted we pop and make the popcorn balls in the basement (we had a stove and sink there). Now I know why she insisted this not be done in "her" kitchen!!!!

lol -- very recently I decided I would make popcorn balls as treats for my Sunday night kids at church.  After all a nice, big popcorn ball studded with M&Ms, jelly beans and all sorts of treats would be wonderful - something the kids would never forget.
Neither will I !!!
What a mess - how time consuming - what an amount of labor.  I'll never do that again.

I had made popcorn balls with my friends kids..  We used the recipe for marshmellow treats and when the marshmellow mixture  was almost melted, I added 1/2 a box of strawberry jello to the marshmellow mixture til well blended. poured it over the popcorn  had the kids butter thier hands while I stired  it all together. the youngest kept buttering her hands. when all done the kids liked them and the youngest took her's home showing off what she made.

Six kids at one time!  Kathe, you are a lot braver than most grandparents,  me included lol.  But think of all the memories your grandchildren will have of you and the fun projects.

When I was a kid we always got popcorn balls for Halloween.
But now days everything has to be from the store and in the same package
from the store. No one give homemade things anymore.  You can't
even give homemade treats at school for the childs birthday. The world
is really different then when I was a kid. My grandchildren don't know how
to play games and do things outside by them selves. They can not even
be outside by them selves  especially at night. We always played hid and seek after dark.
