The other day I had to peel about 10 lbs of potatoes for some salad I was going to make. I couldn't find my veggie peeler right away, but fortunately there it was-- in the last place I looked-lol. I remember back when I was a kid how fasinated I was at my mom and grandmother. They could peel a potato with a pairing knife- taking just the top skin off, and all in one long peel faster than I can do it with the veggie peeler. She said it came from many, many years of practice on thousands of potatoes. My dad said he had to peel many potatoes when he was on K P duty in the Army and Navy. He was not as good as she was though. I think I will stick with the veggie peeler.

Cute story! Potatoes are grown in many parts of the world and are used as a main food.

My Mom taught me to peel them with a paring knife - the trick is to do it when they are still hot - peelings come right off paper thin!

Much as I try I just can't use a peeler for potatoes although once in a while I use it for carrots.   Guess I'm just too used to using a paring knife all these years.

Just like H.M., I can't use a peeler.  I depend on really good paring knives that I keep sharp.

I never was very good at peeling potatoes.  Not with a knife - that was terrible.  And with the peeler, I hacked off potato as well as the peelings.  So I started using cans of potatoes.  I dump them in soups or whatever.  I don't like them anyway & husband does not complain, so I guess they are okay.

I LOVE potatoes ..... second to tomatoes, fresh, home-grown, sliced tomatoes, potatoes are the best vegetable on the planet.
They are a pain to peel but IMHO worth every effort.
Carrots are one of the necessary, not very tasty things.

It does sound strange but sometimes you have to try a couple different peelers to get the one that works just right.  I have 2 I like very much one is an OXO the other is a Y shaped peeler.  Both work very well but had to go through a few before I found them.
Some work better if you peel away from you some are better if you peel towards you.

Growing up, one of my jobs was peeling the potatoes.  I always used a knife and still do.

I very rarely peel potatoes.  We like everything and the peel has value, also.

So many times I don't peel potatoes; just eat them with the skins on.  Yummy!
