My mom has always had family picnics on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day. One of the things that I always looked forward to was the homemade ice cream. When we were little we just could not wait until it was done. Now I have grandchildren and I am the one bringing the ice and rock salt to make the homemade ice cream. What a treat! My grandchildren just love it! We need as parents and grandparents to take time to do the extra little things that we treasure in this busy world we live in. And when you do, you will look back and see that it is the little things that make an occasion special and make memories that will last a life time.

You are so right, Daisy! It is the little things in childhood that we remember the most. It would have been much easier for you to make the ice cream with an ice cream machine in the frig. However, it wouldn't have been so much fun! Are you old enough to remember making ice cream the hand-cranked way?

We even celebrated with indoor picnics and made snow cream in the winter. We have to keep the memories going for the next generation. Thanks for the wake up call to get out the ice cream maker from the back of the closet. It's an electric one but I will be on the look out for a crank type to have some REAL FUN!

Amen, Daisy ! It is soooo important to take time to cook with your grandchildren, both for enjoying the time being together and to pass our traditions on to them. Priceless !!

You can have so much fun with children by showing love and making all the time spent with them fun. The simpler the better.
