I didn't learn how to cook Successfully until after I was married. When I wanted to cook certain foods, roll out my own pastry for chicken, create cobbler or pie crusts, my Grandmother was a phone call away. In North Carolina, we are known for country cooking with special seasoning techniques, as well as home made cobblers and pies from the fruits which are grown there. By phone, my Grandmother taught me all that I know now about cooking and baking. That is something only she & I shared because I was the only one that was interested in being a great cook and baker like she was. Bless her soul, she passed away in 1992, but I remember everything that she taught me, and still use it in my cooking today. These were treasured moments with my Grandma that I will never forget. I hope you too have a special mentor for learning how to cook as I did!

My grandmother was my mentor, too! When I was little, we lived near my grandparents and I would go there every day and help my grandmother. We made home-made macaroni, ravioli, soup, etc. To this day I miss her so much and remember all thatshe taught me.

I did a little baking before I was married but very little.  My husband's step-mother was a great cook and a good baker.  She was my inspiration.  My mother didn't really like cooking and baking all that much.  I even got inspired to do canning from hubby's step-mother.  His mom died when he was 7 and his step-mother was in her late thirties when she married his father.  Hubby was a late in life child so his brother and sister were much older.  That woman loved him like her own.

Grandma's are the best! Mine NEVER measured anything, a pinch of this, dash of that, etc. That's the way she taught both my mom and me to cook!

Great memories!  I remember watching and helping my Grandma cook and bake when I was little.  Since she lived with us it was an everyday experience.  My sister was more interested in going outside to play than helping.  She had some catching up to do when she got older lol.

This made me think of my Great Grandmother Sybil!  I was probably six years old and we were picking "gooseberries".  She must have been in her 80's.......................
