Grandma's Bread

When I was a child, Mom made bread using Grandma's bread recipe. Out of each batch came four loaves of bread. By the time they were cooled, there was one whole loaf missing. We burned our fingers on that hot bread with butter! When I graduated from high school, I joined the Navy. 20 years later, I retired to Florida while the rest of my large family was in New York. Today, when I make bread, I use Grandma's recipe and knead it by hand, Connecting with my past and the family far away. I still eat the end slice while really a bit too hot to touch with more butter than I should!

Very nice story, thanks for sharing.
I love bread, the smell just sends me back to childhood days. I think memories of food and family are the best.

My maternal grandmother used to make a Sweet Bread for Christmas and I couldn't wait to eat it. It was actually just a white bread recipe that she added sugar to, and then sprinkled sugar on top of the loaf. M-m-m-m good!

I remember my Grandma making bread once. I have to wonder why she never made it again. But that homemade bread was the best I had ever had. She cut a slice while it was still hot and put some butter on it then sprinkled it with sugar. That was probably the best slice of bread in the "whole wide world" at the time. And now that I think about it I can almost smell the bread baking.

When I was a tiny child mom made all the bread except during harvest time when such work as baking was almost impossible. Then we'd have a loaf of Wonder Bread. What a thrill. Few things were as wonderous as store bought bread.
And today, more than 60 years later, I still like store bought bread ---

My grandmother used to make bread and rolls all the time. Most of the time when you went to visit her, there was fresh bread in the house. It was the best when it was right out of the oven.

I, too, have the recipe for my Mom's bread and dinner rolls.... When my son and nephews were young they enjoyed "Grandma's rolls" so for Christmas and Easter I make the rolls for our family dinners..

Homemade Bread, AAAh. It is now one of the things that has been become something we do not get because of the work, and because it is a carbohydrate. Sometimes we have to forget the cautions and enjoy the memories and the TASTE!!!

I love hot bread with butter. Two things I don't have all the time. The bread on a sandwich is just not the same.

I also have my grandma's bread recipe. She would bake homemade bread every single day! I can remember those 80 year old hands kneading away!

Does anyone remember having homemade butter on their fresh-out-of-the-oven bread? I do. And then along came margarine, which my Mom loved. So no more butter in our house. To this day, one of my weaknesses is REAL butter.

I love fresh homemade bread. My sister gave me a wonderful recipe for Honey Whole Wheat Bread. It was spectacular just out of the oven. I used to make it quite often, and then I got a bread machine. That made me really lazy, as I could just throw the ingredients in and let it go. Then a toaster oven came along, and I had no more room for the bread machine. My husband put it out in the garage somewhere. I have no idea where it is. I really should get back to making that recipe my sister gave me....but it takes all day. We really don't need the extra calories. It really did taste wonderful though!!!!!

What wonderful memories and oh, it does smell sooo good. I used to make more bread than I do today. Guess the time constraint with my husband's MS and other problems. When my sons were growing up we made a lot of bread. They loved making anadama bread. I haven't made that in quite a while. Made beer bread about two months ago. That was good, too.
