My mother used to occasionally make a pudding cake. She used crumbled up cake as a base, and added pudding on the top as a layer, and refrigerated it. We all loved it, but one day I asked her where she got the recipe. Her answer made me laugh. She told me that when she was first married, she had nothing to do so she would bake. One day the cake she baked wouldn't come out of the baking pan cleanly, and it just crumbled. She was raised to "waste not, want not", so to use the cake she used it as a base and made a package of pudding to put on top. I have made this cake on occasion, and when I do I always giggle a little to myself as I remember where the recipe came from.

What a great story! How clever your mom was and so true about the waste not want not! Thanks for sharing.
