I was a new bride and very anxious to cook for my new husband. I decided to try my hand at gravy. I get the most beautiful meal finished and ready to pour out the gravy into the bowl and the gravy doesn't pour. . . IT SLIDES! JUST LIKE A PANCAKE!! I was so embarrassed and needless to say we didn't eat that gravy!

They have gravy in jars now to have for a back up!  I am sure it saves many people from gravy problems. Wink

It's taken me years to learn how to make gravy, mainly because I only make it about 4 times a year! I've finally figured it out, and have learned to not cook it too long, especially if I'm using my cast iron skillet.

When I was first dating my husband, my family never made gravy from the drippings. We ate the meat without anything on it. My husband taught us how to do it since he was raised with gravy over all meats and enjoyed it that way.

I've been cooking for over 50 years & still have not mastered gravy 100%, it always tastes good, but there are times when it is just not thick enough (that is why it is good to make a well in the mashed potatoes Laughing)

It is still tricky to make gravy. Sometimes it is wonderful and others times well you know.
I have tried out of the jar but my family don't like the taste of it.

Your story made me smile.  How I look back on those days of learning to cook.  Funny thing, I still cannot make gravy to this day.  Smile

 GRANA  here;
MyGrandfather Charles, a pharmacist/chemist is credited,  by the family,as being the inventor  of       " instant" gravy; the  kind that coms in a pkt. It has  saved me more than once by allowing me to make"perfect' gravy ( w/ my eyes shut" & Winkone hand tied behind my back!LaughingI have occasionally gone the old fashioned route & made my gravy using pan dripings.It wasgreat but I felt a traitor to the family.MyDad's little grocery store used to sell instant gravy pkts w/ the family name on them leading me to believe the story despite my Father's tendancy to pull legs& stretch the  truthSmileI hope it's true; it would explain where the family's moneyMoney mouth came fromSealed

My dad loved gravy so mom made it on a regular basis - almost every day.  I grew up helping in the kitchen and didn't know gravy was tricky for some cooks.  My hubby's family was not as big on gravy and he does enjoy it but not as much as me.  My diet goes out the window as I pour on the gravy!
The stuff in jars or cans just doesn't do it for me.

When I saw the name "Pancake Gravy", I was trying to imagine the taste of gravy thickened with pancake mix. I might have tried it. I have thickened gravy with mashed potato flakes when it isn't thickening fast enough.

Cute story, even if it is recycled lol.

I make gravy about three times a year, only for holiday dinners.  Last year for Christmas I used the drippings from the turkey to make gravy.  Good thing I tasted it before putting it on the table.  It was so salty that I almost choked!  Thank goodness I had some jarred gravy to open and heat really quick before anybody was the wiser.

We've all had a similar experience with gravy - that's what the mixes and gravies in a jar are for - back up.

Gravy making has been the downfall of many a cook!  Even after 30+ years of making scratch pan gravy occasionally will get thick gloppy "pancake" gravy.Undecided
