Growing up, I used to follow my nannie around her kitchen all the time. So I learned to bake by watching and helping. When she went back to work, my parents let me stay at her house during the day. Well, I had this great idea to bake a cake. I was only 10 maybe 11. I got out her trusty Better Homes & Garden Red cookbook and found the perfect recipe. EASY and Few ingredients. As I started mixing, there were some ingredients she didn't have so I just left them out. I think it was baking soda. After it was baked and cooled, I iced it real pretty. When everyone came home I was so excited and offered everyone a piece. They all had this puzzled expression like it tasted weird. But not once did they say it was awful. There was plenty of the cake left over so nannie put it in the fridge. About a month later I noticed the cake was pushed all the way to the back of the fridge and covered with a bag to hide it. I asked nannie why, She simply said well hon' it didn't taste anygood and she didn't have the heart to throw it out.... Don't you just love nannies

Grandmas ARE the best. Mine had eaten her share of "badly" cooked food more than once and always tried it with a smile when it came to me!
