My mother used to make a yellow three layer cake with a cooked fudge icing for Christmas. One Christmas when I was young she was making the cake on a rainy day. The layers were perfect. She cooked her icing, but must have cooked it too long. It was hardening fast, making it hard to smear on the cake. She managed to get two layers frosted with no problem. When she put the third layer on, the cake began to crack and split apart. She had me put toothpicks in it to hold it together. Somehow she managed to make an awfully ugly cake that did hold together. When the cake was served there were tooth picks in just about every slice. This past Christmas I decided to make one of her cakes. Would you believe how horrified I was when my cake turned out like hers, except worse. I tried to add milk to my cooked icing, getting it too runny. Then I kept adding powdered sugar trying to harden it. The cake became so heavy with icing that the whole thing began to break apart. Toothpicks wouldn't hold mine together. One side of it looked like a mudslide. I served it anyway, but wouldn't let anyone see the whole cake. It was delicious. I really missed my mother Christmas, but that disaster made me feel as if she were there with me making me remember how much we laughed at that ugly cake she made one Christmas.

It sounds like your mother was wonderful. I think all of us who have lost our mothers, miss her at Christmas.

Hello, I believe your Mom's spirit was enjoying a Christmas visit with you, Dear One! She was with you, smiling with her love, and trying to help you along so you could serve that cake to your family!!---Cheryl C., Poteau, OK.

This lady is my sister. We did indeed have a wonderful mother. Her chocolate cakes were to die for. Her sisters thought theirs were the best but I had news for them. My mama's cake could not be beat. My sister is the most domesticated of all of us. She can do anything. I love her.

This made me teary- eyed Mrs. Marilyn. I imagine that your mama's cakes tasted better than anything you have ever tasted, or ever will taste again. And that's just the way your cooking tastes to your children too, I'm sure. Thanks for sharing!
