Hi everyone, Hope you have had a good day. I baked up a new recipe, well a least it was something new for me to try out. It is called a 5 layer bar. It said to make a graham cracker crust which is about 2 cups of graham crackers crushed up, add 1 stick of melted butter and press into a 9 x 13 x 2 pan, then add a layer of vhovolate chips, butterscothch chips, pecan pieces, flaked sweet coconut and then 1 can of condended milk drizzled over the top. It said to bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes. Cool down and cut and enjoy. We could hardly wait as it was cooking it smelledso good, we took it out and let it cool and then cut it into bars. But it was so sweet. Does anyone know how to fix that problem. We love sweet but even the kids could not believe how sweet it was. We were all like little ping pong balls bouncing around for a while. Also, thanks for all your sweet responses to me getting back on VBB site. It is nice to have friends to talk with. It seems now days we only see the health care providers and a couple of our kids and grandkids and a few others. Most people do not want to come around an Alzheimers patient. But it is their loss not ours. Today was okay, by the grace of our Lord and Savior we made it through another day with out any najor problems. "I can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth me." One of my daughters called and said she was going to come by tomorrow and pick me up to go out to lunch, while LeeAnn is here to watch my husband. That will be nice. I will close for now and hope you all have a good day and keep on baking up good memories. Count your blessings...See what God has done...He never leaves us alone or without hope. The kids in Church sing a song and it says: He sends a rainbow, a lovely rainbow, he sends the rainbow with the rain...So when things seem to be going wrong just stop and praise the Lord in song and in words and you will soon feel your spirit uplifted and joy will feel your heart and take you through. God Bless and take care...my camera has not walked back so I guess I wil have to get another one...Donna G

Instead of semi-sweet chocolate try dark, and instead of butterscotch try peanut butter chips. Also, you may want to add a pinch of salt over the top as salt will cut the oversweet taste.

Thanks for just being a friend and sharing your day. I know the bars your are talking about, I tried them myself and we didn't like the sweetness either so I never made them again.

Glad to hear from you again. I tried that bar recipe also and will not make it again...too sweet for our taste. It's sad that you are not getting as many visitors as you had in the past. Shame on peope who cannot accept Alzheimer's is like any other illness and that you need support more now than ever. You are in my thoughts.

I guess our family just likes sweets. I have used the Magic Cookie Bar recipe for years and I always use a complete bag of chocolate chips and a complete bag of butterscotch chips plus the nuts, coconut and the fat-free sweetened condensed milk. My son calls these his magic money bars.

I am so glad to hear that you are doing well. I have missed reading about what you have done and made for the day! You are always in my thoughts! Have fun at lunch with your daughter.

This recipe sounds delicious! I might just try it. As far as the Alzheimer's goes, I took care of a friend's mother who had end stage Alzheimers. I took care of her for 4 years because although she lived with my friend, my friend had MS and could not physically care for her mom. Not one member of the family ever came to visit or offer to sit with their mom/grandmother. It is very sad when family won't be their for one another. Thanks for sharing your story and the recipe

Donna you have no idea what your words meant to me today! I have used these all day long!
He sends a rainbow, a lovely rainbow, He sends the rainbow with the rain. So when things seem to be going wrong just stop and praise the Lord in song and in words and you will soon feel your spirit uplifted and joy will fill your heart and take you through.

Donna G, When I make these 5 layer bars I leave OFF the butterscotch chips, because it is way to sweet for us. to me it does taste alot better without the butterscothch chips. You are in my prayers.

I've made something very similiar. It has a chocolate cip cookie base, and I melted the chocolate cips in with the sweetened condensed milk. I too understand about Alzheimer's. I'm a nurse who works with only Alzheimer's and Dementia patients. I agree, people who don't want to be around them lose out. I get to give these special people love and affection everyday. Let us know how your new batch of cookie bars turn out!

Just keep praying. That helps. I have been doing a lot of praying. My husband has MS and I recently had to have knee surgery. I am doing better; however, with my husband's situation it has not been easy. One of my son's lives about an hour away and has been a blessing taking care of my husband while I was in the hospital and bringing both of us to our doctor appmts. He went away for a few days and our other son came here from Baltimore and has been taking us to appmts, grocery shopping, cooking, etc. The son who is away for a few days comes back on Sunday and our other son leaves to go back to Baltimore on Sunday. I don't know what I would do without prayer. You and your family will be in my prayers!!!

By adding a layer of chopped nuts, it will cut the sweetness some but if that's not enough then I agree with Nancy G from MO, just send them on to Winnsboro. I have a button on my Facebook page that says "I've never met a chocolate I didn't like" That goes for sweets in general.

I don't know if anybody ever heard of the WIGGLES. Well anyway they had this saying. When things go wrong sing a song. My eldest son after hearing that at Christmas time was at work with my youngest son somethings were going wrong so he spoke up & said when things go wrong sing a song. Then they both laughed. It is true if you sing a song things seem to go better. especialy if it is a Christen song. I made them Magic Cookie Bars before, but as you said they were toooo sweet.
