Too bad the family "joke" was not explained to your friend.  I would have "passed" as well.

For orientals the pronunciation of the letter "R" sometimes sounds like our english "L".
I had several oriental friends in college and learned to listen to the intent rather than first impressions.
Several of them made excellent fried lice - um, rice.  So much so that many restaurants do not measure up to expectations.

I used to make fantastic "flied lice" - "flied" instead of fried.  First I roasted pork with 5-spice powder and then finely chopped it to use in rice.   Oh -------- that was good.  Makes me hungry.

Too funny!!!!!!!!!  Many nationalities have problems with the english language and some of our words.  I know I did when I was a child lol.

I am originally from Japan.  I can relate to this story  ...    Embarassed
It was hard for me for a while to pronounce " R " sound as well as " TH " sound.

Evidently your friend didn't appreciate the many cultures that others do. Knowing that people from other countries who learn our language as adults have difficulty pronouncing some words. Bless those who do learn more than their native language. I love fried rice and I'll bet your friend did miss out on a delicious taste. It did make me laugh to see how people can misunderstand.
