When I was 4 years old, my grandmother was making dinner rolls. (She was known for miles around for her baking and cooking.) I asked if I could help, and she said yes. She tied a tea towel around me and showed me how to shape the dough into rolls. I conscientiously did my best to follow her example. We finished shaping them, put them up to rise, baked them, and had them with dinner. My whole family told me how wonderful my rolls were. Twenty-some years later, she told me "the rest of the story": She hadn't had me wash my hands before letting me at the dough. My dinner rolls were little works of art, with dirt mixed in with the dough. But her cousin, Dave, who was a great favorite of mine, ate every one of my rolls, complementing me with practically every bite...I believe my love of baking comes, in large part, from her, bless her!
