My second oldest daughter (now 17) has been baking and cooking on her own since she was about 10. She loves brownies and I recently purchased a really good box mix that she wanted to bake. I warned her that although she'd baked plenty of meals, since our oven is old and a bit tempermental, she'd have to watch the time and tempurature closer than on other types of foods.
The first attempt (a double batch, of course) came out like a brick. We had to chip it out of the pan with a heavy duty spatula, and the edges were soaked out. If dogs could eat chocolate, it would have made excellent treats! They tasted very good, if you could get a bit off without hurting your teeth!
So not to be 'beaten' by the brownie - she made 3 consecutive batches with varying degrees of success before she finally got the 'perfect' brownie. Now I let her bake them all. :)

If at first you do not succeed, try try again. That's my motto

I have a relatively new oven & I can't trust the temps that it shows.  I bought a temp guage that hangs from the racks & keep it in the oven.  When the preheat buzzer goes off, I check my new temp guage and go by what the guage reads.  Buy one & see if this helps?
