One Mother's day, my daughters and husband made me breakfast in bed. The girls made the bisquits and scrambled eggs and my husband made the gravy. I should say, he tried to make the gravy. Instead of mixing the flour and water together, then adding it to the milk and sausage, he just dumped the flour in. It was served to me in bed on a tray with flowers. The eggs were very good, surprisingly no eggshells. The bisquits and gravy, well lets just say the gravy was solid. I bit into them and little puffs of flour exploded in my mouth. It was so thick that it was like choking down sawdust. He saw the look on my face and said that I didn't have to eat it. I tried to, but couldn't choke down more than two mouthfuls. He gave it to the dog and the dog wouldn't eat it. We've decided that I will continue to make the gravy.

Oh my!  You were brave to try to eat that gravy.  It truly was the thought that counted.

My gravy story is a bit different.  I was unexpectedly hospitalized (kidney stone) and my sons were cooking supper.  Pot roast with potatoes, carrots & onions is an easy one pot meal.  They were following instructions and so far, so good.  My older son had asked for instructions for the gravy.  Roast & veggies were put in serving bowls and he was ready to make gravy. He turned around to see his dad fill the roasting pan with soap & water.  No nice browned bits and broth for gravy.  My son was still mad at his dad when he called me to report on supper.
That son is an excellent cook now, years later.
