When my oldest son was 9 years old he wanted a confederate flag decorated for his birthday cake. It was a much remembered birthday for him when he saw his cake decorated like a confederate flag.

It's nice to be able to make your son happy on his special day with a decorated cake he asked for.

There is nothing nice, sweet or cute about passing on racist ideas. This is one story that the author should have kept to themself. A confederate flag drudges up horrible memories for a lot of people of color in the South.

what was his gift his own sheet to join the KKK?? This is not an acceptable memory for a family site!! Maybe his cake should have been more appropriate for a 9 year old. My boys had ninja turtles, he-man, scooby doo, spiderman, etc. you should be ashamed of yourself Dolores!

Dolores, Thanks for sharing your precious memory of your son's 9th birthday! I don't think he meant any harm in asking for a confederate flag cake. It's sad that some folks can take something so innocent and precious and turn it into something ugly. How hypocritical is it to make nasty comments about your cake and then for that person to make a ninja turtles cake for her son?! Unbelievable! Obviously, she didn't know the violence the ninja turtles stood for! They were banned from many a household! Thanks again, Dolores, for sharing your memory, and nevermind the racist comments you received for doing so. There are many of us who appreciate such memories. Have a great weekend!

To Dolores: It's always nice to be able to grant a child's request for a special cake regardless what it is. As for the flag, it is just a flag of days gone by. It's only racist in some weird people's small minds! Keep baking whatever you like.

To Vicki and Anita: This was a child's birthday cake not a racist symbol! Get over it, it's only in your minds.

To H M from Arlington Heights - unless you have ever experienced it, you would never understand it. The only small mind in an intelligent discussion is those who lack the intellect to make a valid point so people are supposed to "Get Over It!"

Hey, Carol the ninja turtles were a cartoon not an ugly symbol of racist days gone by!! My kids would not even have known what a confederate flag was unless brought up in that type of house. And HM YOU get over it I've brought my kids up differently and more innocently than this and they are both upstanding young men now...ninja turtles and all!!

How did a sweet memory about a little boy's 9th birthday cake turn this column into something so ugly?! I was brought up in a home where we had respect for "all" people....no matter the color of their skin, their disability, what-have-you. And I still have respect for them. It's very sad however when people read racism into a comment that had nothing to do with racism whatsoever! Sorry, Vicki, but I never said that the ninja turtles were "an ugly symbol of racist days gone by." I said they were violent, not racist!
