This is not so much a baking memory but instead a childhood memory and the Nestle Tollhouse Inn. When I was a small child we lived in Whitman, Massachusetts where the original Tollhouse Inn was located. (I was very saddened to learn it burned a few years ago.) You could walk past and the aroma was captivating. I believe at that time it was a restaraunt, but in my mind it was full of wonderful cooks in big white chef hats making giant, chocolate chip cookies! The neighborhood kids, myself included, accidentaly found a shortcut to the back of the Tollhouse Inn. We wandered through the woods into an open field where we found blueberry bushes. As we walked and picked blueberries we found ourselves in an apple orchard. But it wasn't the apple orchard that inspired our continued journey, it was the magnificant scent of giant chocolate chip cookies in the air! Before we knew it we had reached the Inn! But no sooner had we realized our discovery, a man yelled at us for trespassing in his apple orchard and shooed us away. After that we rarely wandered past the blueberry bushes and were left to our imagination as to just how big those cookies must be! Those were wonderful childhood moments for me and everytime I bake Tollhouse Chocolate Chip Cookies I am reliving this memory and realize how something as simple as a cookie can make a great impression on a child.

Thanks for the memories, I too remember a flour mill across the street from where my Grandmother and Grandfather lived, and my Grandmother work. I can easily now recall walking into the mill and visiting with her, while they filled the bags full of flour.
So thanks for sharing, Merry Christmas and God Bless.
