When you have the joy of sharing a home with a sixteen year old there are no dull days. Life is full of drama, but getting in the kitchen together is a great way to stay bonded. While so many families are complaining about teens who don't talk we are enjoying meal planning and memories. Our daughter, as her older brother and sister, have always been welcome in the kitchen. It is the heart of the home, and it is a great way to ease into conversations that build relationships. I've always encouraged our kids to be creative in the kitchen. Our son and his wife welcome their two year old to bake as well. She has plenty of adult supervision! The kitchen is an artist's palate, and at times the counters and floor may be a little more colorful than usual. I cherish that love and all those memories that are baked up in there. We do not always know when a teachable or reachable moment will happen, but they do flow freely when we are cooking and baking. The kitchen is a place of therapy for my daughter and I. She faces a lot of choices in high school. She can open up and talk about some choices that her class mates have made. While we make up new recipies she is making decisions about what type of life style she wants. She has a safe place to work out feelings. Kneeding bread dough is great therapy after a long day at school. A delicious finished product is a change of pace from the world we find ourselves in outside of our home. Recently my daugher told me about a class mate who is pregnant at sixteen. The months ahead will be difficult for that child. Not all children have homes where they can feel safe and loved. To hear my daughter express that she feels safe and loved is what a mother longs for. The time we spend in the kitchen is a recipie for a strong relationship. That's my favorite recipie! Each of our children create their own individual recipies. The ingredients are love, acceptance and a willingness to make some mistakes.
