My father was career military and when we were in Germany I was old enough to babysit, being the second of seven most parents thought I had plenty of experience. This was in the 1950s so a lot of money was a dollar an hour - which is what I normally charged. The family that lived above us had a young boy that I would sometimes babysit. On one occasion I was left some chocolate oatmeal and coconut macaroons. I was told that I could have as many as I wanted. I had never had any before and became quite the glutton and ate them all. The next time they asked me to babysit we worked out a deal. They would have some more chocolate oatmeal coconut macaroons, a coke or pepsi and I would charge them a flat rate no matter how late they were - $5.00. I ate the cookies and they stayed out from 7pm - 1am. It seemed a very good trade off to an eleven year old boy.

Also very smart for an eleven year old boy.
What a great idea especially today when people do not bake much. It might entice sitters if you offered homemade baked goods.

You made a good deal with the parents, but I think you made out better.

Higregory, I'am amazed that you got paid 1.00 an hour back then, I only got .50 cents an hour in the late 60's and only charged $1.00 an hour in the '90's. but that was a great deal for you!, :-).
