When I was young, 11 years old, my mom passed away. It was probably about 2 years later that my granny Mc taught me how to make buttermilk biscuits completely from scratch, I mean no measuring any of the ingredients. This was in her kitchen, a domain shared by very few, but I received the Honor. This event opened my eyes to the limitlss possibilities in the kitchen. This memory brings a smile to my face every time I think about it.

It reminds me of when I was about 12, I asked my great grandmother for her icing recipe...I wrote it down but could never duplicate it because it was ...some of this, a bit of this, to taste....I just keep it and look at my big loopy 12 yr old handwriting and it makes me smile!!

My Grandmother was dutch and she taught my sister and myself how to make the dutch dumplings, which was a family recipe handed down from generation to generation.

I love to cook without measuring. It is so nice to have those role models to show us the way.

My maternal great-grandmother and my grandmother never measured anything either and it used to make me nuts when I would try to remember their recipes! My fondest memory was the night before a family get-together when my Nanny had me manually stuff ziti. It took hours and was it monotonous! To my horror, I watched my family devour my efforts within minutes the next day!
