I grew up on a farm, living near many of my aunts and uncles and especially my grandparents. My mother was an excellent cook, as were most all of my relatives. One of my very favorite things were my grandmother's refrigerator cookies. Just simple cookies with chopped walnuts but they were yummy!
Although I was more of a tomboy than an inside girl, one day when I was 7 or 8 I decided I simply had to know how to bake those cookies. I went to my grandmother and asked her for the recipe. As with a lot of her cooking, she had to think a bit because most of her recipes were kept safely in her head. But we finally decided on the ingredients and I carefully wrote them down on a recipe card, took them home and quickly assembled the listed ingredients. Then I began reading the instructions and became panic struck !!!
"Mom! .. I have everything that's listed here but I don't see any cream... Please call Grandma and as her how much cream I need to use!"....
My mom took a closer look and asked me what I was reading... "Cream butter, sugar and eggs...."
After assuring me that all was well, Mom explained how to 'creme' the moist ingredients. The new cook had a lot to learn.
This silly story was saved until I was a more confident cook and then it was shared with family and friends.
I can still remember the excitement of making my first cookies and the panic caused by an 'incomplete' recipe. Each time I make those cookies I think so fondly of my grandmother and mother and all of those wonderful cooks who shared so much and did so much for me. Sheila Lester
