Each year as Halloween approaches, I remember the wonderful times I shared with my Foster Parents, and the fun we had as we prepared for the onslaught of Trick or Treaters in their neighborhood. There wasn't a child in a 5 mile radius that was not aware of my foster mom's delectable Popcorn Balls and the "Other Goodies" that took her about a week to purchase, inspect, and bag for each child. Mom had a heart of gold when it came to children and that heart showed through in everything she did for her own children, the foster children she and Dad raised later, as well as the neighborhood children.
Dad would always take her to the city once a week, on his day off, to do the grocery shopping, and it was a standing joke that each time she walked out of the store, that Mom had "done it again", that is, cleaned off the shelves of the store. He knew somehow, that Mom was never satisfied with doing the minimum, she always had to make sure that the trip to her house was memorable, and that parents would have no problem knowing what came from her house, or if it was safe for their children to eat. About one week before Halloween, Mom would begin the preparations for making her yearly Popcorn Balls. She would first make sure that she had enough popcorn, along with all the rest of the ingredients that were necessary. Then she would inspect her large stockpots, to make sure that they were in good condition, and able to handle the dozens of times that they would be filled. I remember watching the popcorn pop in the old wire baskets that were reminiscent of days gone by. When the popping was done, it was poured into one of the large stockpots to be covered with the mixture that Mom made from her Betty Crocker cookbook. Then she would butter her hands and form the popcorn mixture into balls, and finally, allow them to harden on large sheets of waxed paper that lined her kitchen table. The last year I recall her making these popcorn balls, she had put together over 300 of them, and still had children asking for them more than an hour after they were gone. When I had my children, we also made the Popcorn Balls, but I made about 3 dozen, not the 300 Mom had made. Mine went to our children's classrooms for Halloween Parties, and afew extra were always included for the teachers that couldn't resist the temptation to sneak in and sample a piece of my childhood. I make my popcorn balls every once in a while now for our grandchildren and I have to laugh when they ask me which store I bought them at, so they can get them for their friends at school. I tell them they come from Nana's store, and if they want some more for their friends, Nana will be happy to make some more. Recipes like these are what memories are made of, and I am sure that my foster mom and dad are watching from above as another generation enjoys some sweet treats that they had a part in making.

I really enjoyed your story! What memories you have of your Foster parents, especially your mom and her Halloween treats. People now a days don't want to make their own Halloween treats and others aren't sure about eating treats homemade. I could almost smell the popcorn balls.

Popcornballs were always my favorite at Halloween. It was so much safer back when I was a kid. Homemade cookies and all that stuff was good and safe. It's a shame you have to worry about razor blades in apples and stuff laced with drugs, etc. Theose people who do stuff like that takes the fun out of halloween. I bet they enjoyed trick or treating when they were kids so why do they have to ruin it for the children now? Great story

What a beautiful memory you have. i am so glad that you had wonderful foster parents. My husband and I also helped with children when we were younger. At one time we had 16 children in our home. We were a safe house for abused and runaway children. We had our own children also. We have been blessed to keep in contact with almost all of the children and teenagers we had the priviledge of helping. We hear so many horror stories about foster parents but God knows there are some that truly love helping the children. Ours was a short term but we did have 2 children that lived with us for 3 years and then another that we adopted. Thanks for bringing back beautiful memories to me as you shared your wonderful story. God Bless, and have a good day, Donna G.

What a wonderful story about family memories and holidays. You are blessed. Your memory of this experience with your foster parents and family would make a great children's book.
