We were living in Hawaii at the time this story takes place. Living with us were my daughter, her husband, their two children , and our two other daughters. We had a house high abouve diamond head with the most fabulous view and of course the weather there is pretty near always perfect. It was my habit to take my two grandchildren, (at that time they were nearly 3 and 5) outside and we would walk around the yard looking at the flowers for her and trying to find geckos for him.
As his birthday approached I thought it would be really neat to have a birthday cake with geckos on it, because he was obsessed with them. We always had to go outside and find him a gecko each day! and on the occassions when the geckos got in the house (as they often did) he was ecstatic. So I made geckos. I made a dozen sugar cookie geckos, different sizes and then one very large sheet cake, carved into a giant gecko. After I had iced and decorated all of them, I placed the cookies on and around the cake so that they appeared to be climbing on the big gecko. I was not really sure how it would go over, and worried that maybe I should have just stuck with Winnie the Pooh or something he would really know. But when he saw that cake and clapped and clapped and jus kept saying gecko, gecko, I knew it was a hit and I shouldn't have worried at all. My only concern after that is that he might try to catch a live gecko and eat it!!

Great story.  My grandson is afraid of lizards and bugs so he might not appreciate a gecko cake.  Sounds like fun to make, though.
