I was a junior in high school the year the village was made. We had never attempted a house, let alone a whole village, but the baking and cooking bug had bitten and my friends and I were determined to build a whole village. One weekend three of my friends stayed over and we got up very early to begin our project. fortunately, I had a mother who not only encouraged us to try, but helped to make sure we had all the ingredients from flour and molasses to icing and candies. We spent the whole day, first cutting templates out of x-ray films, baking our gingerbread, cutting and cooling. Several times we had cave-ins and collapses, but we presevered and finally we had a village to cover the entire dining room table (which sat 8, so it was very large!) After all the pieces were built, Mom told us that she had set up a special table in the formal living room for us to display it. Piece by piece we carefully moved and arranged our Christmas village. Mom supplied us with white cotton batting for snow and a strand of Christmas lights to arrange around the table. The four of us were very proud of ourselves and it started two traditions in our family that year. First, we NEVER built an entire village again, but every year Mom receives a ceramic piece to add to her very own village, and I always make ONE gingerbread house. I have been thinking of building a second village. Maybe I can enlist my daughter and grandchildren and spend a wintery Saturday building houses. Yes, even a few pieces, would be fun and give my grandchildren a wonderful memory. Who knows, maybe we can start a new tradition in our family.
