My Nannie made tons of pies for Thanksgiving & Christmas dinners. The very best one, everyone's favorite, was her Chocolate Pie. It had a rich chocolate flavor & meringue piled high. But she didn't call it meringue. She called it calf slobbers. Because that is what she said it looked like before she would put it in the oven to brown. Just the thought of eating calf slobber grossed me out! I would scrape that nasty stuff off & eat my chocolate pie without it. To this day, I don't eat meringue. I do make my Nannie's chocolate pie for every holiday. But, I leave off the calf slobbers! Yuck!

Great to see that someone else also calls meringue calf slobbers. One has to have lived on a farm and fed calves to know why meringue has this name. That's what we called it when we were kids much to Mom's dismay. We also had other colorful descriptions of other food Mom made.

I am with you-- I don't think I could eat something called calf slobbers, and now everytime I see a meringue pie, I am going to think of that. I have never liked meringue before, so I won't be missing out on anything. lol

This is too funny! I had a great aunt who called meringue the same thing! She knew it grossed me out & I wouldn't eat it either. She would always save me a bowl of just the pudding to enjoy w/o the "calf slobbers"!
