I ALWAYS break an egg into a little bowl, THEN dump it into the mixer or pan or wherever it goes. One time, many years ago, I got egg shell into the fast moving mixer and promised myself that wouldn't happen again.

It is too easy to lose a chip of eggshell when the mixer is going. Haste makes waste trying to crack the egg directly into the batter
