I suppose I was a typical 13 year old kid. my favorite things to do then were read and spend time in the kitchen with my mom, learning to cook and bake. This particular date was my parents 14th wedding anniversary, and I had been told that anniversaries were to be special occasions. Since my Dad was working on his PhD at the time, money was always guarded carefully, so I decided to take it upon myself to make my parents day the very best ever. I set the table , picked mom's flowers from the yard, put them in a vase, and fixed them dinner and dessert. I feven fed my brothers and myself before my parents got home.
I had watched (and helped a little ) Mom fix spaghetti and garlic bread on several occasions, and was sure I could pull it off. I was not exactly sure what seasonings Mom used in her spaghetti, so I played it safe, I put everything in it! Did you know that cloves really should NOT go in spaghetti, and maybe not ginger either.. also it only takes a little bit of garlic (not the whole bottle of powder) added to a stick of butter for garlic bread.
But the dessert looke absolutely perfect, and I was so proud of myself. I maded Dad's all time favorite, lemon meringue pies(two of them).
Later (many years later) I learned that Dad and Mom had dinner reservations they cancelled because I made dinner.
(It took two hours to clean that mess up in the kitchen, but it was worth it!!)
Dad and Mom choked (literally) the spaghetti and garlic bread down, but when the pie came out,Dad commented on how good they looked, and Mom said how I got the meringue the perfect shad of golden brown. Then we all dug in and ... OOPS, I forgot the sugar. Thats right, not wven a teaspoon of sugar was in that pie, not in the meringue and not in the filling!!
Many years later, I had to go to work and left my own thirteen year old to fix spaghetti for dinner. I told her to fix it with green beans, and left the ingredients (seasonings) and instructions on the counter. I thought that was very smart of me, but when I got home my husband asked me why I told my daughter to put the green beans in the spaghetti? and whose brillant idea was it to add not one, but two cups of sugar to the spaghetti sauce? She said well I have watched Dad make it and he always adds sugar to the sauce! (yes, but only a coulpe of teaspoonsful!)
