I have one cat and he is a part of my family.  I got him a few years ago after I lost the cat that I had for 17 years.  He was like one of my kids.

Sarah, I'm sorry about your losing your dog. I know from experience how you feel. We had a few dogs over the years, but there are two of them that I really miss the most. They've been gone for years now, but it is like losing a member of the family and I still think about them quite often. I know it's going to take me a long time to get over losing my cat earlier this year, too. I still see him in my mind doing certain things. He was so precious! I'm just glad I have lots of photo reminders of him!

Some of you old timers may remember that my husband and I have a dog that lives in our back yard.  We fondly refer to her as either Sheba or Orphan Dog.  She wandered into this development when it was being built.  Someone must have dropped her off along the highway nearby.

When we moved in, she was so skinny we thought she was a Whippit, a very streamlined dog, but you could count her ribs.  She was in bad shape.  She would run along the path near our house.

We began to feed her and now, 3 1/2 yrs later, after a litter of 8 beautiful puppies who now have wonderful homes, she is ours.  We had her spayed.  She thinks she owns our yard.  She thinks she's in charge of us!

The only sad part of the story is that we cannot pet her.  She will come close enough to take a treat from our hand but backs away if we reach out to pet her.

She is healthy and wags her tail and runs around like a young puppy!  I'm writing a book about her and hope to publish it in the near future.

My two human son's have always refered to my dogs as my third and forth sons. How could they not be a part of your family, they love us ,entertain us and protect us.My friend aquired an Amish puppy mill rescue, she is a five year old female that was forced to live in a cage and have 9 litters of pups. She was bought at an auction for 10 dollars. She required multiple surgeries to repair hernias. This dog couldn't even walk on the cement or grass because she has never done so in her life, she had only walked on the bottom of her wire cage. She was not housebroken, she knew only to relieve herself in the cage. The first time I saw my friends dog a lot of hair was shaved away,I asked her if the vet did this for the surgeries, her answer was no, the puppy mill did this so she could be hosed off, because the cages are stacked on one another. In the last 6 months she has made great progress living with her new family.I talked with my friend last night only to find out the dog had a gran mal seizure, cause unknown , possibly a blow to the head from her past owner.PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE do not buy puppies from these puppy mills or anyone they supply, this will continue until the demand is gone. There are thousands and thousands of great dogs and cats at the shelters waiting for their forever homes. If you must buy a pure breed please know who you are buying from and only buy from a reputable breeder.I have always had a dog in my life and couldn't imagine life without them.

YES CAROL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!iI've seen too many examples of pets being unvalued posessions& had to bring up the subject.
R PETS A PART OF YOUR FAMILY OR MERELY POSESSIONS???????????????????:
In Response to ARE YO R PETS A PART OF YOUR FAMILY OR MERELY POSESSIONS??????????????????? : That's neat, Ann, that the majority of the votes say pets are definitely part of the family!! Our cat sure is and he's taken over the house since he moved in earlier this year after we lost our beloved cat of 14 years. I still miss him because he was so much a part of our family. I really think it is sad when people have pets and they don't really care one way or another about them. They are more like a possession to them. Why would a person want a pet if not to love and make a part of their family? And I have a question for you, Ann. Yours is the second post I've seen added with a survey attached. How are you attaching a survey???

Sarah so sorry for the loss of Bailey. It is the hardest thing in the world to lose a child...but since I have none of those...losing a dog is the hardest thing to Hubby & I. They are our kids. Time & memories & photos you have taken will help.
Rescuing another dog seems to help the pain . Your saving a new life...and you know Bailey wouldn't want you to not have that wonderful dog love.

Harriet...Kiss
I WILL BUY THE BOOK.
You know I remember the storySmile. I'm so glad you & Hubby were able to keep her. I know you debated about it.
Sheba has picked you for a reason. She trusts you... but whomever hurt or treated her badly is what's causing her to pull back & not let you pet her. In time she may finally give & let you all the way into her heart and trust people again. It will happen.
I know how hard that can be... but it will happen. I'm so glad you kept her...or did she keep you.  "SMILE"

Our cat, Dusty, has been a member of our family for almost 16 years. He is the most sweet tempered animal you will ever want to meet. He is an indoor cat since we don't want to lose him. He really gets stressed out when he has to go for a ride in the car. We do this at least twice a year for vacations. He has lost his litter mate at the age of 2 to a freak accident and when after 20 years of being a widow, I remarried, along came three other cats, Mama, Princess, and Boomer. The two females made poor Dusty's life miserable. The would almost hunt him, circiling him until finally after many weeks of watchful vigilance the family settled in with the "boys" together and Princess now claiming me for her own. Dusty is alone again since Mama was the last of the three to die. She was almost 20 and finally called a truce and would come to sit on my lap and would treat Dusty as family.

My husband, John, will really be devastated when Dusty dies as I will. You cannot imagine (or maybe my animal lovers can) how much a part of a family this little red cat is...

I love my pets as much as a human.  They are not half as much trouble and they are always loving.  If I could be as nice
and forgiving as a pet, I would be a better person.

I am not foolish enough to think that I own my pets.  They own me.
I depend on my dog to let me vent and get out frustrations, she won't tell anyone what I have said.  Made the decision to get the dog after my husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and it has been great having her around.
We had had a German Shep. for 16 years and the hardest decision I ever made was to have her put to sleep, I said then I would never get another dog.  I didn't think I could go through a pain and heartbreak like that ever again.  My resolve lasted about 9 years then the diagnosis came and I knew I would need some 4 legged help.
Have 2 cats that can't stand each other and the dog loves to antagonize them both.  It's like having kids in the house again.

We lost our miniature black schnauzer, Sooie to cancer about 2 1/2 years ago.  We were without a dog for about a year and a half.  One cold and icy day in March we came home to see a small white fluffy dog running around our house outside.  We put food out and it would be gone in the morning.  We have no idea where she spent her nights as the weather was not good even here in central AR.  She would always run from us when we tried to talk to her.  It took about 4 days before she reluctantly came to me.  She sat at my feet shaking until I petted her.  Suddenly she was barking, jumping around and knew she had found a home.  She had a collar on but no license or I.D. tag.  We named her Peaches and took her to the vet.  She did not have a micro chip either.  The vet said she was a small cocker mix and was about 10 months old.  We had her innoculated, licensed, microchipped and spayed. Peaches loves to go with us in the car and sleeps on our bed.  Our neighbors say Sooie sent her to us.  She is indeed part of our family, an important part.

Erica...

You are correct.... they are like big 'ole teddy bears, only softer.
Hubby & I have rescued many, many Rotties the last 25 years. Every one of them, male or female have appreciated their new home and all the love they receive.
Yep...they pretty much own us, too. Wouldn't want it any other way.

Gale G,
I know exactly how you are feeling. Our pets become so much a part of our family that when they are gone there is a hole in our lives. When I lost my dog, I could still see her in the corners of my mind, walking around the house, laying in her favorite spot...

I got the news Wednesday that family member Broadway, my 14 year old foster failure has lymphoma and probably won't live through the holidays.  If there was anything that made me realize that my pets were part of my family it was that - but at at least his final year was lived in comfort inside with cushy pillows to lie on. (He lived outside 27/7 for his first 13 years.) He brought so much joy to our lives!

HELP!!! My cat, Dusty, has been a part of our family for 16 years. As I stated before, he is a sweet tempered loving cat that will be dearly missed. I am now having a problem with him pooping outside of the litter box. He doesn't do it all the time, but has started to do it again. I have had him to the vet and they found nothing wrong with him. Does anyone have any ideas? I can't catch him doing it to put him in the litter box to re-train him. It is very upsetting and I don't want anyone to accidently step in thebusiness when they get up at night which is when he usually relieves himself.
