Are they part of your family or merely posessions or pesky pests??????????
 some of us think of our animals as family members,trying to provide them comfortable & happy lives w/ all they need.
We feel we get much more back than we give: unquestioned love; loyalty; laughs & affection.
Recently research has shown that pet owners live longer & have  lower blood pressure .
If VBB has room & wil allow it; I'd like to see us share pictures of our pets & perhaps "short"  stories about them?

We have a 9 year old cat named Holly.  She is the light of our lives.  She acts more like a dog as when you snap your fingers and want her to come she does!  She loves to talk and she gets on your lap and purrs and wags her tail like a dog.  She is very hynerous, too.

Some day I'll tell you why I got them.

My two human son's have always refered to my dogs as my third and forth sons.How could they not be a part of your family,they love us ,entertain us and protect us.My friend aquired an Amish puppy mill rescue,she is a five year old female that was forced to live in a cage and have 9 litters of pups.She was bought at an auction for 10 dollars.She required multiple surgeries to repair hernias.This dog couldn't even walk on the cement or grass because she has never done so in her life,she had only walked on the bottom of her wire cage.She was not housebroken,she knew only to relieve herself in the cage.The first time I saw my friends dog a lot of hair was shaved away,I asked her if the vet did this for the surgeries,her answer was no, the puppy mill did this so she could be hosed off,because the cages are stacked on one another.In the last 6 months she has made great progress living with her new family.I talked with my friend last night only to find out the dog had a gran mal seizure,cause unknown , possibly a blow to the head from her past owner.PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE do not buy puppies from these puppy mills or anyone they supply,this will continue until the demand is gone.There are thousands and thousands of great dogs and cats at the shelters waiting for their forever homes.If you must buy a pure breed please know who you are buying from and only buy from a reputable breeder.I have always had a dog in my life and couldn't imagine life without them.

Amen!  The shelter I work at takes in a fair number of puppy mill dogs - usually females who have been bred many times and are past their usefulness.  They, too, have never walked on or smelled the grass.  So sad!  BTW - at least 40% (probably much higher) of the dogs found in shelters are pure-breds, so I'd beg you to shop around there before seeking out a breeder, unless you are looking for a show dog who cannot be spayed/neutered in the show ring.  Think adoption first! :)

Thanks for those kind words, Nancy.  It is a job I truly love.  I am currently on leave following my back surgery, as my boss was not comfortable with me using a wheelchair, for fear I might run over a cat, but I can hardly wait to get back.  I visited the other day and was so happy to see my friends, both human and of the 4-legged persuasion!

My cats are family. My babies. Daddy and son. Both nutty like us so they fit in purrfect. I like that my cats possess me too, lol. They love to curl up and sleep in your lap. Smokey when he was born adopted Brian my son as his daddy. He follows him like a dog does. His little shadow. I love them dearly.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How could our beloved pets be anything but family.
Anyone here who knows me... knows all about our Rottweilers.
We started out just loving the breed. After a few years when all the rescue org's started up we started rescuing Rotts.
Everyone knows how a black dog of any breed is the last to be adopted...
I am proud to say we have been rescuing Rottweilers over 26 years now.
They have all come from different states & situations. Some we knew very little about to knowing nothing at all.
The happiest time of our lives was when we had 4 Rotties at a time. They brought so much to our family.
All the Nieces & Nephews couldn't wait to meet & play with the Rotts. They all had a blast.
We have 3 Rotts now...and our neighbors yellow lab (who was also rescued) comes over to play with our Rotts every day. They all just adore each other.
I don't think people realize how many dogs & cats have been sent to the animal shelters & rescue orgs. People that have lost their jobs & homes... have had to give up their beloved pets. It's very sad. These are the people I feel the most for. They didn't have a choice. You know their hearts just broke to give their beloved pet away.
I can't imagine what the pet thinks...they had a loving warm home with a cushy bed & toys and now they are in a strange place. I can't imagine what those poor pets think & feel. They are just waiting to be adopted by another loving home.
Then you have all the dogs & cats that have been saved from the puppy mills. Those poor babies. I'm sure VBB wouldn't approve for me to write what I really think & really feel like these puppy mill owners should have happen to them....
All of those innocent little & big dogs.
Erica....
Thank you...thank you.... thank you... for all that you do at the animal shelter you work at.
Erica - Tomorrow, in my state, Missouri, we're having a vote about puppy mills (and Missouri has more hideous puppy mills than any other state.)
The wording of the bill (1,200 pages, I think) is very, very confusing and very scary.
In Response to Re: ARE YO R PETS A PART OF YOUR FAMILY OR MERELY POSESSIONS??????????????????? : Pam it is so great that you resue Rottweilers,that is a difficult breed to place due to their size and somewhat of a bad reputation.We also looked at a Rottweiler at our local shelter,he was a very sweet dog and I would have loved to bring him home,my son just loved him .Where I live you must have a fenced in yard,with a 6 ft. fence and carry a liabilty policy for each of the dogs.This is also true of Pit Bulls.Our insurance carrier would not even cover these dogs.I think it is such ashame.I always dreamed of having a rescue when I retired,but because of health issues I had to stop working way before that.We adopted a Baseji mix about 6 mons ago,his name is Romeo and he is now 8 mons. old.Over the years I have taken in stray cats and dogs,we kept the ones we could and found good homes for the ones we couldn't .Our pets are such an important part of our lives,I just don't know what I would do without mine.All the good souls out there that have dedicated their lives to these precious creatures,God bless you all.
Thank you Gayle...
Unfortunately...Rotties & Pit bulls aren't the only dog breeds that Insurance companies have issues with.
German Shepherds, Chows, Dobies, Bulldogs, Mastiff's, actually all dogs with the word bull in them, even Stafordshire Terriers.
Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes & Siberian Huskies, even Presa Canarios...or any of the dogs breeds mentioned above mixed with any other breeds.
All of this because of ignorant people that won't take responsibility for their dogs.
I know for us personally... we shopped around for an Insurance company that would cover liability. We dropped our old Ins co. just as soon as they said they wouldn't cover us.
We didn't care if we had to pay more for it or not. We have been rescuing Rotts over 26 years & never ever had any kind of issue or problem. The Insurance copany looks at that & sees we are responsible people with our dogs.
Gayle that is wonderful you found yourself a Basenj mix. They are great dogs. A friend of mine had one of those. Hers was comedian. Funniest dog. I know for a fact that dog tried to make you laugh. He was great.
I can say from our experience everyone of our Rotty boys were easy going & mellow, always wanting to please. We even had 3 male Rotts at one time. They were great.
They are wonderful dogs. Oversized teddy bears. We love our Rotts.
I just wish everyone could experience the love of a dog to really understand how we dog lovers feel about our dogs.SmileKiss
Just coming home to be greeted by a wagging tail & smiling face...dog love is very special.
I love cats too, but Hubby is allergic. Two of the Rotts love cats, the other Rott we don't know if she ever experienced
 a cat or not.
That's neat, Ann, that the majority of the votes say pets are definitely part of the family!! Smile
Our cat sure is and he's taken over the house since he moved in earlier this year after we lost our beloved cat of 14 years. I still miss him because he was so much a part of our family. I really think it is sad when people have pets and they don't really care one way or another about them. They are more like a possession to them. Why would a person want a pet if not to love and make a part of their family?
And I have a question for you, Ann. Yours is the second post I've seen added with a survey attached. How are you attaching a survey???
