My son calls me , telling me he is at work, something is wrong. He was having accute pains in stomach and side.I told him I would pick him up bring him to the hospital. This was at 7;30 in the morning. He said he could not leave. The bosses dad would not let him leave. He called me 3 times saying it was worse, as if a knife was being stabbed in them.I called the doctor, he said to get him to hospital. So I go to pick him up. He would not allow him to leave.I told him I would call an ambulance, He decides to let him go.Giving me mouth. I was shocked by this man. They  wanted him to stay until 11;30.
My son has an infection of the intestines.

So what do you think of the behavior of this man? Mind you he works in a sub shop,he has worked alone many times. The man has done every job there.I just do not get it.I would like your feedback.I'am very upset over this matter.

Julie -- I know nothing at all about "law"  but I can't believe it's legal to keep anyone who wants to go to the hospital.
I can see a boss objecting if someone wants to go home because they don't feel good but wanting to go to the
hospital is another thing entirely.
Good luck with this situation.

I would call Labor Relations!  You cannot tell an employee that they cannot leave to go home do to sickness and most of all, the hospital.  He needs to be reported and I know jobs are hard to find, but your son should think about finding another job.  Family and health comes first...then work, some people forget this!

I hope your son is feeling better!  Bless his heart!!

Hi Julie, like Susan said call the Labor Relations and see what his rights are.My Husband had a similar situation when he was working as a Para- Medic.mind you a Para-Medic in the medical field! I hope he feels better soon.If he can afford to he should quit and find another job.Who would want to work for someone like that.Too many employers today care only about the all mighty dollar and not their employees the people that do the work!

I think it is horrible that this man would not allow your son to go to the hospital.  That is just crazy.  Unfortunately, there are a lot of employers out there who just don't care about their employees.  I guess they figure they can always find someone else to replace him if he quits.  I don't think I would want my son working for him.

I hope your son has a quick recovery!

Hope and pray your son has made a full recovery but I suggest he look for another job as soon as possible.  This boss is impossible to work for.  He is heartless and your son should have just laid down and then had the boss call an ambulance.  If he would have had a ruptured intestine he would have not been back to work for weeks.  I would talk to an attorney to see if this man can be held accountable for his actions.

The actions of the boss are reprehensible.  I ' m wondering if the boss thought he was faking just to get out of work, but obviously he wasn't.   This boss has no regard for his employees.  I hope you son is feeling better, and I'd suggest he look for another job.

I certainly hope your son feels better now.  I can understand the "boss" not being sympathetic if he thinks a person is only pretending to be sick.  But this was way beyond that.  It should have been obvious that this was not some trick.  I really hope the man has apologized by now.  But if not, I do not believe it is a good place to work.  Truthfully, if the boss wants employees who are sick to work even while they are ill, I would think the local Health Department would object.  But in any case the boss does not have any respect or concern for his workers.  Your son is better off not working there, even if he loved the job otherwise.

This bosses' behavior was the pits.  Report him to his company and Labor Relations.

That is SOOO not right.  I feel for your son and hope he is feeling better, and that once he is I suggest it might be time to hunt for a new job!  I also agree that his boss should be reported.  Good luck!

I would've called an ambulance & a cop - let the cop handle the manager, let the ambulance take your son. God forbid it was worse like an appendix & had it ruptured, I would've went back to that boss & slapped him upside the head with the sub.  It's a job & health is more important! They're not creating man for crying out loud.  I personally would quit after he feels better.  Report to Consumer affairs, Better Business Bureau & see a lawyer - most lawyers give a free consult.  You don't have to sue but could & the lawyer could tell you who to legally complain too.  I'd write an email/letter to the head office too, explaining the situation & how sick your son was.  I never heard of anything so ridiculous!  It's maddening!  Had it been the boss, he would've left before the first phone call

Sadly, my husbands job did the same thing when we had a fire! Can you believe that? I can understand your anger and frusteration and  alongside the labor board, call your local news station and make it public, it sounds extreme but it REALLY does bring results!

If this is a sub shop with a corporate office I would contact the corporate office and report the manager.  But this is something you son should do, unless he is a minor.
You could report the way the manager spoke to you.  No one deserves to be spoken to in an unprofessional manner.
If your son is working full time there is no way they would have fired him because they then would have had to pay unemployment.  That is an expense that I am sure they do not want to incur.
The other department you may want to consider reporting to is the Local or County Health Department.  If they are "forcing" an employee to work while they are sick that is taking the public health into jeopardy.  If the infection he was diagnosed with is able to be transmitted via direct hand contact even more reason to report the incident to the health department.

I do hope your son is feeling better.

Julie, I pray that your son is doing better now.  That man had no right to keep him there when he was sick.  God forbid your son could've collapsed while working!  Any employer who is that heartless and unfeeling deserves to be reported to the Labor Board and his corporate office.  Even if it's a privately owned franchise store,  the company they represent doesn't want that kind of publicity.  Working around ovens and knives while sick is very dangerous when sick.  I know, my son used to work at a sub shop too.
