Another favorite of mine .......
Cook some dried pinto beans, a couple smoked pork chops in lots of water and a bit of dried onion if you want.   When the beans are nearly done remove the pork chops and tear them into small pieces, removing fat and bone.  Toss the pork back in, add a bit of salt

My vegetable soup consists of whatever I have in the freezer to dump into it.  I never use a recipe and always use barley in it.

In Response to Re: Vegetable Soup:
Frances - I save all my left over veggies in one jar in the freezer.  What ever amount of what ever veggie goes in the soup. Isn't it funny that I would never, never eat lima beans as part of a meal but I buy the tiny limas in the tiny can and use that in veg soup.  I can't imagine any soup without limas.

I'm not allowed to imagine a Thanksgiving meal without lima beans (succotash) My Mom in law had it every Thanksgiving and that is a request of my husbands every year.I don't remember what character used to say "Suffering Succotash" I wonder if this is what they meant? lol I do like lima beans however and always make them for him along with a couple of other vegetable dishes.

My Husband refused to eat my bean soup for the last 32 years and I finally talked him into a taste. His face lite up and said "Hey this is good" He hated his mom's bean soup,he said it tasted like saw dust, which I asure you it did not,she was an excellant cook and baker.I use pinto beans and ham bone in mine along with onions ,carrots and celery.I think pinto beans are the bean of choice in Eastern European bean soup.As if there weren't already enough carbs in here my mom would add dumplings too!

But --- I shouldn't have said "pinto" beans.   ALL beans are good.   I never met a bean I didn't like.

Boy, hamburger soup sounds good -- really good.  I wish I had some of the meat in the freezer.  Next trip out I'll buy some.

Well, I made my "next trip" to the grocery and bought some hamburger.  It's bubbling away and I  should have soup in about a half hour!
