I went to the grocery store this morning.  I was almost our of Sugar....what did I find?  Sugar now packaged in 4 pound packages instead of 5.  My husband says it is because they don't want to raise the prices, so they just make smaller packages.  I did notice that the 10 pound packages are still available...  Have you noticed that toilet paper is narrower?  The whole thing makes me angry.  How dumb do these manufacturers think we are?

Barbara -- that's so very annoying!  Write or call the company.  That won't change a thing but maybe enough calls or letters will slow them down a bit next time.

Take a look at the length of a loaf of bread, the size of a bottle of Tide or other soap. Open a bag of chips.

When gas prices soared some months ago, manufacturers were face with raising the prices to enormous highs or raising them some and cutting the package sizes down.

I haven't seen a 5 lb bag of sugar in about 5 years.

Most everything in the stores is now smaller than it used to be.  Sometimes they even let us buy it at the same price as before LOL.  About the only thing that still comes in the same size is a can of pumpkin.  Wonder how long before they change that too?

Not only are toilet paper rolls narrower but you are lucky to find double sheets.  The quality has gone by the wayside.

Are we all retirees??? I remember my parents complaining about the change in costs etc. and used to laugh, but now I am doing the same thing. I guess perspective changes with where you are in life. I have heard many of my contemporaries say, "The Golden Years, what's so golden?"

Sugar in smaller bags, narrow toilet paper now they are going to market toilet paper without cardboard rolls in the center.  Going to "save the planet" by eliminating the cardboard.
When was the last time any one was able to buy a 1/2 gallon ofice cream.  Ice cream packaging is getting smaller and smaller. Want to try something interesting, take 2 containers of ice cream, one a "bargain" brand and one a "premium" quality, bring them to the produce section and place the bargain one on a scale and note the weight, place the premium one on the scale and notice how much heavier it is.  All the air they whip into the bargain one is amazing. And we pay for all that air.
OK I just scared myself I have officially turned into my parents! Laughing

Reduction has been around a few years. Less for more is nothing new. The American way "I got it so I spend it". I use cent off coupons. I have using them for forty years. It helps. I purchased a four pound bag of Dixie Crystal Sugar for one dollar two days ago. Coupons help me.

Good for you, Maxine!!  I guess we have to use any recourse we have.  As to the ice cream a couple of weeks ago I found a package that said 20% more.....guess what It still did not contain 1/2 gal.  It was Dreyer's  or Edy's on the east coast.  Up until recently we were able to get the sugar in 5 lb packages.  We get C&H sugar here as we are in California.  Actually, i usually buy my sugar at Costco where I can get it in 10 lb packages! (and it costs less than in the regular super markets)

Seems everything is changing even the size of clothes. I used ot wear a size one now it is up two size two or maybe three depending on cut. Size one now when u hold it up look like a size 12. Hard too find a gallon of ice cream like you said but a few do still make it. And I hate when I pay all that money and the ice cream has freezer burm happens to often. Paper towels have shrunk too.

Nancy G,
I used to spend time clipping coupons, routing my errands in a circle to save money and gas, buying larger sizes because they used to be cheaper, but today with all my chicks gone from the nest it is just two of us and frankly I look for quality purchases. I belong to the clubs such as BJ's and Sams. BJs gives me a big plus since they accept manufacturers coupons and they have few cents cheaper gasoline too . The membership is worth it because of these savings, but you still have to be alert. I also do a lot of "from scratch" cooking. Having someone else doing most of the work is costly. I also try not to buy too much at one time because with only two people to cook for there can be a lot of waste.

Most things seem to be coming in smaller amounts or packaging.  You really have to read the labels for amounts, size and weights.  Indeed we do seem to turn into our parents, especially when we begin to have fixed incomes.

Sharon I also have the clothing problem.  I wear 3/4 or 4/5 sometimes 5/6. Don't you love it when some salesperson says "You should go to the childrens department" or "you should gain weight". I have reported this to store managers.  I have told a few you should lose weight.  I asked some "do I look like a child to you?"
Dixie Crystal sugar is Imperial sugar in some areas. Domino sugar is sold in 4 pounds,5 pounds and 10 pounds

They think we are very dumb BUT only for a limited time.  Here in Georgia 4lb sugar is all you have been able to buy for quite some time now. The prices are now starting to go up too. The people are in for a surprise due to the commodity markets. Prices will soon skyrocket on all the foodstuffs. I have been buying in quantity a year now and have quite a supply built up. Correct storage procedures need to be researched and canning should be considered as it will keep for an eternity. I remember eating 7 year old peaches when I was a kid that were just as good as right off the tree.
God help us all and good luck.

BARBARA B;A 1/2 GLLON ( 64OZ) of  ICECREAM
Nnowweighsonly 56 OZ That's 8 ozor 2 1/2cup servings less in each pkg. "A one  pound can"of coffee, nowweighs from 11-13 oz, that's quite a few less servings per can.I don't think the mf.r thinks we're stupid;I think they justdon't think we'll notice!!!!!!!!!!!
I know from experience that many shoppers do not even notice.Thery get angry at me when I point it out.I shop bythr UNIT PRICE  SHELF STICKERS & get a naccurateprice per unit( pound, ounce or 100 ct. This gives me a more asccurate way to compare prices before choosing an item
BTW; I also randomly check to besure these unit[pricesare accurate too.
" caveat emptor" .."LET THE BUYER BEWARE'
