I just noticed Nellie had mentioned people stealing dogs.On the news the other they had mentioned several Cleveland dogs have been stolen and some are not pure breed either but just mutts.Neither of my dogs are pure breed.I have them both Micro chipped in the event they are lost.I think I would just die if something ever happened to Romeo or Juliet. The Micro chips are around $40 I think it's a good investment.Collars can be lost. The micro chip is inserted between the shoulders of the dog via a needle, the microchip is about the size of a grain of rice.

Right Gale!!  That microchip is invaluable.  My mix-breed, funny cats have that for their safety and my concern.

Problem with micro chipping is that the chips will only be discovered when someone brings the dog to a vet and they scan it.  My grandson's two dogs ran away in October both were chipped and neither has been returned.  We suspect that someone took them in. (better that than the alternative thought) Unless the people that found them have the dogs scanned they will most likely not be returned.
I have both my dogs micro chipped but until my Grandsons dogs ran away I just assumed that a vet would scan an animal but we all know what assume means don't we!

if the person who finds the animal takes it to the vet and tells them that they found the dog----------------if they have a scanner they will check it

i tried to adopt a pure-bred -------------chocolate beagle--------------a few yrs ago-----------took him to vet for shots & heartworm tests------------he was scanned--------but did not have one-----------i had problems with him because he evidently was not trained in any way and he was too large for me to handle---------------i called some beagle rescue group and they picked him up--------------i gave them the shot records and his heartworm pills--------collar & leash------------and food---they were very appreciative for the pills

the following week i bought my--------jenny--------almost exactly the size i need

It never ceases to amaze me what people will steal!  And I don't buy into the "it's the bad economy" thing either.  People who can't afford food may resort to stealing it to eat, but I seriously doubt that people stealing animals are doing it for any reason except to fund bad habits maybe.

Hopefully all of your animals will be safe from these "predators".

It is not always easy to find the chip - even if the dog is scanned.  My sister's two big dogs got out of her back yard, because utility people left a gate open after they did some work.  Animal Control picked them up, but it was that night before they found the chip on one of the dogs.   You would think that a place like that would be experienced at checking for chips, etc.  But apparently not.

GRANA  here; I thinkweall hopethatstolendogswereaken becausesomeo" JUST HADTO HAVE THAT DOGGIE"
Sadly it might not be so nice a reason.animals are somtimes stollen to supply subjects for lab testingtin( food products& cosmetics. You should micro chip your  pets to give them the chance to get backhome to you.even months later when law enforcement or a  recue group gets your pet through a raid or other method.
To not put in a chip becuseit s 'long shot" is a poor excuse.Doesn't your pet deserve every chance possible to get back home?????
Pehaps a child took your pet home & at some time in the uture it  is taken to a Vet; the chip might then be discoverd & you'll get a phone call or visit w/ the good  news.Surprised

I agree Ann,I would think an animal shelter would also check for a micro chip. Before I found Romeo,we saw a little black Pekinese and I fell in love with her.She had a tag and the owner was notify by phone and at that point she had been there for three weeks and no one was showing up to claim her.The kennel holds them for a full thirty days before they can allow someone to adopt. We were on the top of the waiting list, went down when we were supposed to and she was gone her owner finally came to get her.I was sad that I didn't get her, but very happy her owner found her and she was back where she should be.Another happy ending.I found my two fur babies and I'm so in love with them. Both my dogs and cat died within one year and it was so very depressing but these two have won my heart over.

the dog stolen  by the bicyle thief was  an eight lb ball of fluff --a gray and white  shih tzu-bichon mix worth about 300.00 in a pet store-----the thief asked for a wallet first-----but the owner was not carrying one--------then he asked him for a medical pump he was wearing on his waist and he explained that it was attached to his body the man who had a very large knife grabbed the dog from his arms and rode away

Perhaps in the past dogs mlight have been stolen for research purposes, but now there's such strick government rules on supplying research dogs, that they have to be bred for that purpose.  The researchers have to pay really big bux for these dogs.
Gone are the days of cheap research dogs.  They used to be purchased from pounds instead of being euthanized, but now they cannot be sold.  I used to work in a medical research facility where dogs were bought from dealers.  Nobody really knew where the dealers got their dogs, but most of them were purchased from pounds and shelters.  I imagine some could have been stolen.  All that went away when the gov't regulations came in.  No more dealers and research dogs are purchased from purpose breeders.
The worst thing dogs are stolen for are for the dog fighting "sport".    Hopefully people keep their dogs confined to a yard or kennel and don't let them run loose.  Of course they could be stolen from someone's yard if the thief were desperate.

Sad to say that here in SC, dogs are often taken to be used as bait for dog fighting.  We were very picky about who adopted the puppies born to our orphan dog.

While this practice is illegal, that doesn't stop it from happening.  It breaks my heart to think about it, but it is a fact.

You are so very right.I try to not think about this,it sickens me.Just take care of your pets, don't leave them out un supervised. Both my dogs are paper trained they are only out for their walks.I did this because I could never go after them if they got loose. They are trying to pass a law making it illegal to chain your dog outside. My other dogs went out while I watched them, unchained and no fence they knew their boundaries. My neighbors couldn't believe how well trained they were.

It is such a terrible thing to do - steal dogs.  They are usually somebody's pet and I'm sure they will miss them tremendously.  I can't even image the heartbreak especially for a little kid.

The smaller breeds are being stolen and resold. They mentioned a few breeds that are at the top of the list.Yorkies,Boston terriers,Maltese and Chihuahuas. So sad that people stoop so low just to make money on someone else's pain.
