Americans have been smoking for avery long time,at least since the Indians in Virginia traded some tobacco to the Europeans coming over to colonize this land.
TheIndians/nativeAmericans smoked pipes   & the colonists followed their example.
Sincethen, tobacco use hasseen many changes:
 "lighter"  cigs
longer cigs
 mint  flavored cigs
fruit & liquor flavored pipe tobacco
chewing toacco
No cigs ( banned in many cities, restaurants; hospitals; office buildings & stores)
No cigs; people have or are trying to stop for "health reasons

Nocigs; taxes on them have gone up so high people, especiallly youngsters are finding it impossible t o  afford them

Never smoked! Never will!
Watched Grandpa,Mom, Grandma, and my Dad die from smoking related cancers.
(I shouldn't admit this but)Did try "funny cigarettes" way, way, way back, when I was much younger and much more stupid. I didn't like them at all.

I smoked 3 1/2 packs a day --- 42 years !!!
I had my last one Oct. 10, 2005.    I loved smoking, enjoyed every cigarette I smoked and had no desire to quit.  Then ~whew~ I was diagnosed with that hateful brain tumor and told I'd be in the hospital for testing many times before surgery.
I checked into Barnes in St. Louis for MRI, PET, then into a room to be wired down for a VEEG probably 7 days .... not allowed to get out of bed even to go to the bathroom.
I prayed asking God to take charge - I never smoked another.

Since I was 14! Every time I have quit, I gain enough weight to sink a battleship! I did not smoke when I was pregnant though. Or when the kids were small (son had severe asthma) and I gained up to about 200 lb. Once they were in school, and sons asthma was outgrown, I started back and by then, I had been off of them for 13 years and weighed 298 lbs. I was a chain smoker going thru 2 cartons + a week. So did my husband. When they went up in '05 or the first of '06, I quit cold turkey. Husband said he did too but, he didn't and he still smokes. But, not in the house or around me because I still crave them. I also weigh about 210 lbs again! Hubby has sworn all along that he quit but, I could smell them and saw the butts on ground around driveway and burn marks on my car seats.Yell Last week, I was cleaning the ceiling and walls in the bathroom and knocked the curtain down on one side. I put the step ladder in the tub to fix it and found his "not smoking" stash on top of  high shelf. I tossed them to him and told him to try to make me believe those were from our daughter visiting once a month.

I grew up in a home where both parents smoked heavily; I probably inhaled enough second-hand smoke to have been considerd a smoker myself.  Husband and I are non-smokers, but our son, who moved back in with us after 13 years of being on his own, smokes a lot.  He is good about not smoling in the house, however - even in frigid weather he will go out on the front step or the deck in back, so my house doesn't smell of smoke.

I started smoking at 14 because I was dumb enough to let a girlfriend of mine talk me into it...and I continued to smoke until I got pregnant with my son and I got so sick that I spent a whole weekend on the couch having trouble breathing(have had breathing isssues most of my life) and I decided I didnt need cigarettes anymore and I quit cold turkey..was smoke free for 4 years until my husband deployed to Saudi Abrabia in Desert Storm..and I only smoked to calm my nerves..quit smoking the day after he came home in 91 and havent smoked since...but he smokes and that is his choice..2 of my grown children smoke and 1 doesnt...wished they would quit but you cant force them ..they have to want to

I smoked during college and a few years after that (late 1960's, early 70's), and enjoyed it immensely. After 3 or 4 years of marriage I decided to try to quit, and gradually eliminated places where I smoked - first inside the house, then in the car, then at work, etc. I finally stopped, but the cravings lasted for over 30 years. For the past 2 years I hadn't thought about smoking until this question came up - guess I'm finally over the craving!

NANCY ;What a wonderful testimonyCool.  iI hope you speak out often about this  '"miracle"  So  many people try for years using:hypnosis, Rx  drugs, & all sorts of helpful aids & most fail to stop!
I've seen quite  few people in our city w/oxygen tanks hooked up t their noses pulling the wheeled tank w/ one hand & holding a lit cigarette in the other.The brother of a friend is one of these.He " really wants to quit smoking; tried everything" but still smokes. The Mother of a neighbor visitsoften.They do notalowherto smokeintheirhouse.Yell On the coldest wettest  most windy days, even the hottest most humid summer days she stands outside in the miserable weather to "enjoy" / have her smoke;
it's that important to herFrown!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Having never smoked or even desire to I feel  feel heartfelt &  deep concern/pity for those entraped by that nasty habit.

My guess is that smoking is a very difficult addiction to stop.  It is "socially acceptable" and I use that term very loosely since there is now more pressure on people to quit or more places are banning it in public places.
Cigarettes are legal to purchase, easy to buy all be it very expensive.
It is not just a chemical reaction to the smoking but a physical one, you have a meal, you smoke, you have a drink, you smoke, you have a cup of coffee or tea, you smoke.  There is a comfort in the routine.
My sister has always been a lot thinner than me, she smoked I didn't.  Her "drug" of choice was cigarettes my "drug" of choice was food.
So it does make it difficult for people to quit.

Hubby smoked 3 packs a day(inhaling every singe  one).Yell
WhenI  was pregnant w/ our first child he lost his job.Money was v ery tight!   Still he" had to buy his d*^2rned cigs; feeling awfull & guilty that  our limitted food money was used  for that instead of healthy food for his wife & unborn baby.He tried to stop; using every method known (at that time) to stop.
He endured gum  diseae possibly caused by the tar build up  along his  gumline
,
After I had my stroke, following a drunk driver smashing into me. I had breathing difficulties.Respiratory therapy helped but thes moke in our home was deffinitely a problem, for me .Hubby stoped smoking  & now nearly 30 years later, remains a non-smoker.He was no longer a" couch potato; got up andwalked1/4 mile a day to start; increasing distance & spee, dtil h e ran 2 full marathons & one half marathon in a singre month. His goal was not to win; but just to FINISH . He finished every one of his 20+ races; each time increasing his speed. In one race( for seniors, he actually placed 3rd.He was only 59 yo running against men as old as 80 but he met his goal of finishing at an improved speed over  his last race.e.
His many years of damaging his heart bysmoking & inhaling3+ packs a day, a finally led to a heart attack. Three docs insisted he retire & go on  (social security) disability. He went back to work on a  full tmie schedule the day after the doctor signed the release form.He worked up to 70 hrs.each week till he retired by choice about ten years later. He still walks 5 miles each day. On very cold days he walks 3 miles  two times since  lenthy exposure to the  the extreme cold is not good for heart patients. He limits his exposure to extreme cold & repeats the  3 mile course to get in his 5 miles w/ minimal term time outside. His lungs seem to be cleared, finally .They say that when you stop smoking,it takes25 years to regain your full lung health/ capacity. It's been that long & w/ respiiratory therapy( deep long inhalations & exhalations, ( breathing  out & in , deeply) he seems to have regained that ( healthy lung  status. If you are tryingto stop smoking, get help, don't give in ( to that nasty weed) & never give up trying to re- gain a healthy c ontrol of your life!
Ifyou smoke or ;chew tobacco; don't deceive yourself; you will eventually pay the price for your folly.Cry Even if you don'tconsider the monetary price ofthat nasty habit; ( $3 &  up   per pack; your body cannot maintain   good aquality of life for long w/ the constant intake of smoke caried toxins(poisons)
If you have stopped, like NANCY;  please share your victorious story. We ( on VBB) all care about each other & want us all to live out our lives to the full extent intended by g-d  and in a healthy body

All the "sohisticatd" girls smoked when I was in college.  I was definitely not one of the "in" crowd.
I considered it stinky, a waste of time and I couldn't afford it anyway.
My husband had quit smoking before we even met.  Neither of our sons or their wives smoke.
I, for one really appreciate the ban on smoking indoors in any public place that Illinois has had for the last few years

I was a smoker for 28 years and smoked about 1 1/2 packs a day.  In 2006 I had to have back surgery and the doctor told me that smoking affects the healing process of the bones and the overall healing too.  So I quit smoking and never touched another one ever since.   I must say, food taste so much better and I gained weight!
