When you shop do you take time to read ingredients on items you are purchasing?
Discuss all things non-baking
The reason I'm asking is because, lately, last 6 mos, I have.  Then I look up items on the internet.  One is acesulfame potassium, not healthy,  found in diet pop, diet flavored water,

I try to read the labels most of the time when I shop.  Guess I too will have to be more thorough.

Nancy- Just don't tell anyone.  They will love the cookies!!

Nikki- I just, recently purchased Fage.  Walmart has had coupons @ the small wagon, with the greeter.  You can take as many as you want.  They are 1.00 off the 17.6 oz size & .50 off the small size with the fruit included.

You never know what is in the product unless you read the ingredients.  I have swithed from Yoplait yogurt to Chobani Greek yogurt.  It is sooo good!

I always read the labels. If there is high frucose corn syrup or sodium benzoate as an ingredient, it goes back on the shelf.  These ingredients are in lots of salad dressings and pickle relish.  I don't have a problem with crushed beetles for color. To me, thats better than a chemically made color.

DiAnne,I check everything on the labels for ingredients, expiration dates and price you name it and I check it.The bugs that they use is a natural product and that is how they can say it is a natural product, gross but it is natural.I knew years ago that they used them in lipstick. There are so many products that contain things that we would not eat if we knew what they where.

Gale- I know there is so much we are not aware of what they incorporate in our food.  I am, personally, trying to learn to stay away from those additives.  The Aztecs and Inca's (South American cultures) used Carmine for coloring and painting.  We are ingesting this through our food.  It has been known to cause problems in children with hyperactivity caused by Sodium Benzoate combined with artificial food dyes. This combo I found in grape Crush.  All I'm saying is I am being careful.  I, too, changed from purchasing Yoplait and Dannon yogurt to Chobai greek, natural, yogurt, Stoneyfield or Fage.  There are companies who use beet juice & carrot juice for color and I feel other companies could use these and other natural products instead.  More and more companies are starting to take a look at what American's are expecting the manufacturers to incorporate in our food and some changes are taking place toward real natural.  This might be a start.

Have a Super, wonderful day!  I't beautiful in Indiana and you live so close in Ohio, an weather seems close to mine.

Amazing...just this evening on the news there was a report that Food Dyes may have an effect on children.  I think we have known that for years.  It is mostly red dyes that they were focusing on. Think there is more of an effect on children with ADD but it makes you wonder..what came first the dye or the disorder.  Are we seeing more diagnosis of ADD because of the increased use of dyes or are doctors over diagnosing.

Hi Nikki - It is hard to say what came first.  My info was from   naturalnews.com  when I first posted the info about Carmine & the sweetener  that is in diet pop, diet yogurt etc.

I first posted this to inform VBB's about Carmine, coloring & what our Food & Drug Administration allows manuacturers to incorporate in our food.

This is a personal thing that I am doing, monitoring what is in my food and what I choose to purchase.  I am glad there has been interest and everyone knows about these additives, coloring and can do according to their own will.  Hopefully, this has helped some people.

I try and keep up with things and will post as I find out, only, to inform, not to change anyone's mind.

You bet I do.  I check for sodium, sugars, fats of all kinds and artificial stuff.  No yogurt for me that has sugar, color or fat in it.  Add my own fruit which is canned in natural juice.  Crushed pineapple added to plain yogurt is really good.  A bit of home made granola (so I know exactly what's in it)  on top makes a great lunch.
