This morning I had a root canal.  Believe it or not, it was no big deal.  People always say how horrible they are, but mine was a piece of cake.  I had a really good guy doing it.

Glad to hear that it didn't hurt at all (only paying the bill.  That always hurts).  Hope you are still feeling great.

Usually the bill is the worst lpart of a root canal - the best part - when it's finished.

Judy - I'm glad it was so "easy".   Root canals are as good as the dentist doing them.   I've had 6, maybe 7 or  8 .... I quit counting a long time ago.

I had the same experience with my root canal.
I was pretty worried about it, as a matter of fact I put it off after the endodontist suggested that possibly a change of filling material might help.  I did that and the day I was leaving on a vacation the pain returned.  I got clove oil and that helped a bit for 2 weeks until I returned and willingly underwent the procedure.
I must say that the pain previous to the root canal was worse than the procedure.  It did not hurt at all. (except the location of the shot of novocaine)

Much like a colonoscopy the reports of the procedure are worse than the procedure itself. But as someone pointed out it may well be the skill of the person administering the care.

The only thing that bothered me was the noise!!  I have been told that they solved that problem; but I still hope I never have to have another one.

My first one ------ I was in North Dakota when the dentist said it was necessary.  I phoned my CA dentist and said I was flying out there ... if I had to have something as dreadful as a root canal I wanted him to do it.  Dear, kind, patient man told me that root canals were not as bad as the rumors and he didn't think the cost of me traveling back to CA was necessary ...... I should just relax.

So I went to the ND dentist and had it done to a tooth supporting a bridge.  Very bad experience and I was soon on a plane going to CA.  ND dentist had drilled through the side of the tooth into bone which can't tolerate the stuff used in those fillings.   The precious tooth had to be removed and then giant bridge work done.  Dentist did it as fast as possible but I was still in a motel for a week.
Dear dentist felt so bad about what had happened he charged me only for supplies.  (this is the dentist who gave me my Kitchen Air mixer a couple years before this)

I've only had one root canal, and it wasn't so bad.  My dentist plays TV shows or movies while you are having the work done.  I think I chose some old "Sienfeld" episodes to watch,and I had a hard time not laughing.  Glad you are doing well!!

The reason your dentist charged you with just supplies, other than the fact he felt bad was that I think single handedly you keep the dentist and the local Weight Watchers in business!Wink

As a retired registered Dental Hygienist I can tell you that you are not alone in being hesitant when facing a root canal.  Most people who related horror stories either were in tremendous pain before hand or had a serious infection going on.....anesthetic doesn't work well when there is infection present.

I'm glad your experience was a good one!!!  I'm also glad that your worst pain is paying the bill and not physical!Laughing

I avoid Weight Watchers ........ Cry...... I have no choice about avoiding a dentist.   My current one, since 1993, is absolutely nuts.  He's totally crazy but does perfect dental work.  Oh, he's funny!!

Hi JUDY O;
GRANA  here;
I agree / you about root canals; not nearly as painful as Ihad thought  based on comments I'veheard  ver the years("I'd rather have a stick n the eye than a root canal"
I had'twinges' in one tooth for several months;and went to my dentist who suggested local endodentist..I went tothe endotentist reccomendedbymy reguar dentist...I was seen /taken on time, explained heproceedure& received several novaccaine shots,noneof  which were more painful than they ever are.Then sheot got serious: drillinhg igging, scraping searching&
pulling; all w/ NO PAIN@ ALL!I was told how to treat any pain that might come later on;it never did! I ate chicken noodle soup yogurt& split peas soup ( no chewing neededThe discomfort was only afew  twinges; but not enough to keep me awake overnight.
An extra strength OTC pain pill [ only one needed  3 times a day to keep me comfortable.
But just as you  just said:" the cost was painfull indeed:
over$1,000 for the root canal & over $500 for the restoration  of the tooth involved( a  tooth colored  crown) We were ffered timepayments & got a Sr idscount for the crown; but stll a lot of money.
The scariest part of the  thing is that beforet the proceedure I hadto sign a paper stating that I understood that here were no guarantees; the procedure might have to be redone.There was a free followup visit about a year afterwards; Several months after that I  had a few twinges in that area of my mouth.I was told to see my regular dentist t again. She looked,poked& exrayed ( another $150+  &  s ggested I  wait &see how things progress or NOT, before making another appt .t w/ the endodentist( root canal expert).
The twinges stopped except for the rare one( once every few wks,, later months but thorough flossing  of that area   takes care of that .I'm gad I waited efore making another  apointment w/ the endodentist.Hubby has budgeted for & set  aside( ourvacationmoney) & budget ed for a  nother if needed...I
Just as you said they'repainfuly  expensive; but you keep your tooth & need no bridgework , go back to a normal pain free life afterwards, chewing meat, even gum( in a few eeks/months) like w/any  crowns/fillings I hope the same endodentist is stil in town & not yet retired when/i if  I have to have another one?
I'm glad we both had pleasant experiences.I hope that   by sharing  Our ROOT CANAL EXPERIENCES we might make it easier & less fearfull for another VBBwho needs one in in the future.
