If you have a restaurant supply in your area look for "bar towels" They are small, no more than about 13 inches by 18 inches.
Or you can check resale shops for washcloths.
I got lucky...I was helping a friend clear out an old family storage unit and I found bags of the bar cloths so I have a "lifetime supply". I use them for everything.
As for the paperback books, look in resale shops most of the time they are around half a dollar or less.
